Self-made: oil change and brake inspection on the Opel Corsa B

Opel Corsa: Who lubricates well, drives well - oil change made himself

Unfortunately, before we can do this with the oil change, we need to quickly renew the brake on the front axle. Because, as we already are in written last part of the Corsa story have plagued our 250 Euro-Renner an unpleasant brake vibration.

Since this was not noticeable in the steering, but only in the brake pedal, we typed on Problem on the rear axle. This has therefore been completely revisedbut the problem persisted. Therefore, now the obviously good brake had to be renewed at the front as well.

Renew brake at front

This is quite simple. Put the car on the trestles, disassemble the wheels and remove the calipers from the wheel carrier. Then do not let the saddle dangle on the brake hose, but while you change the discs briefly put on the wishbone. The brake disc itself is now fixed only on the small screw on the wheel hub. These solve, already the disc can be changed. One can take the opportunity and the wheel hub with wire brush and sanding pad from corrosion to free, so that the new disc has a flat bearing surface. Whoever thinks it is particularly good, can still lubricate the wheel hub with brake, ceramic or copper paste.

DO NOT let it dangle on the brake hose!

Once the new disc has been fitted, push the brake piston back in the saddle. To do so, first open the reservoir of the brake fluid in the engine compartment, so that you do not have to work unnecessarily against the otherwise building pressure. If you do not have a brake piston retractor, you simply take a large water pump pliers and press the piston back into the starting position with the help of the old brake pad. It is therefore not advisable to use the pliers directly on the piston, because you would like to damage the dust protection sleeve.

Once the piston is pushed back, you can get the new ones Brake pads in the saddle Insert the saddle on the disc and then screw it back to the wheel carrier. If you work fast, you can not do it all in Fomel 1-Tempo, but in less than an hour.

Fresh oil: always good! The oil change on Corsa B

Now for the oil change. The oil should have operating temperature, as this ensures that the engine has just run and the oil flow in combination with the high temperature has solved all deposits in the oil system and nothing is deposited anywhere. Now simply position a drip tray under the drain plug, unscrew the screw and wait. Who turns the oil filler cap and the oil filter cartridge dissolves, which is faster with the draining than that, which allows the oil to build a vacuum in the engine.

As soon as most of the oil has run out and only a lingering drop of splashing into the tub, it's time to change the filter. Since there is still a little oil in the console of the oil filter, which you could not move to drain, you should underlay here a rag, if you do not want to mess up the bell.

The new filter is then simply plugged into the lid until it clicks into place. Incidentally, be sure to wet the O-ring to seal the lid, do not dry it! Simply wipe with two fingers through the old oil and wet the sealing ring with it. Already the fresh filter can be mounted. In our case, we have tightened the plastic cover hand-tight, they should have a metal filter in their car, just googling the torque briefly. Handfest here is certainly not a wrong recommendation. (And that's around 20-25 Nm)

Before you can start filling the new oil, just quickly install the new drain plug. The X12XE aluminum motor recommends a new drain plug. If you take the old one, you should at least use a new one. However, considering the difference in price of gasket to new screw with integrated gasket, the decision should be easy.

The correct amount of oil for the engine is also found quickly on the Internet. For example on relevant pages of engine oil manufacturers. If you're not sure or have not found anything, just check the expired amount and fill in the new oil in several steps. (Oh, yes, it's 3.5 liters !!) Until it shows up on the dipstick. If the dipstick is half covered, you can start the engine briefly. If the oil pump has then distributed the oil once in the engine, you can usually fill up a good amount until the oil level is in the optimum range.

Incidentally, we gave our little 65PS machine something very special. On Additive that rattles the hydraulic rams should diminish. Of course, such a special lubricant can not solve a mechanical problem, but it will lessen the cause. Our Corsa fell on the morning cold start and on by gentle rattling of the empty hydraulic tappets. Replacing the Hydros is not only expensive but also relatively expensive, which is why we decided to take this step. And it has shown effect. The rattle is no longer as present as before.

The brake vibrations have done. It was an extremely successful day in the garage!
