Summer tires tested

The change to summer tires is due around Easter. The ADAC recommends the most suitable models of the season.

The range of decent summer tires is large. In a test by the ADAC, the majority of the 32 candidates scored “good” or “satisfactory” in two sizes. Only once was there a “sufficient” and a “poor” grade.

The tests were carried out in two sizes, one for compact and one for mid-range models. The Continental Premium Contact 205, the Semperit Speed-Life 55 and the Bridgestone Turanza T16 are particularly recommended in the smaller dimensions (6/3 R005), which deliver good traction in wet and dry conditions and are also impressive in terms of noise and wear. In terms of wear, the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 shows an impressive mileage of over 55.000 kilometers - and thus lasts twice as long as the worst tire in this category.

In size 225/50 R17, four tires landed at the top: The four Falken Azenis, Continental Premium Contact 6, Kumho Ecsta PS71 and Bridgestone Turanza models rated as “good” are characterized by all-round qualities and good scores in all sub-disciplines. At the end of the field of candidates is the Firestone Roadhawk, which, according to ADAC, is not recommended due to poor braking values in the wet.

Against the background of the results, the testers recommend that when buying tires, ensure that all four tires have the same production date and thus the same technical standard. It is also worth taking a look at the performance in individual disciplines. In the field of candidates, tires with very high wear or poor braking performance in the wet were repeatedly noticed.
