SUVs with double hearts - at Hyundai

In addition to pure E-cars takes Hyundai is also increasing the range of plug-in hybrids. Two new SUVs are now being launched with the electrified drive. One is particularly interesting for large families.

Hyundai is expanding its range of plug-in hybrids. The Santa Fe and Tucson SUV models with a combination of four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor are now also available. In terms of performance and price, they will be the top models in their respective series in the future.

Equipment is not neglected

In the compact SUV Tucson, the powertrain has a total output of 195 kW/265 hp. The 1,6-litre petrol engine contributes 132 kW/180 hp, while the electric motor integrated into the transmission delivers up to 67 kW/91 hp. Six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard, as are 19-inch rims, two-zone automatic climate control and a digital cockpit. Hyundai demands 42.350 euros for the entire package, which is well above the level of the other model variants.

Petrol, diesel and full hybrids range from just under 27.000 euros to a good 39.000 euros. When it comes to performance, the plug-in hybrid outperforms most of its siblings: 100 km/h is reached in 8,2 seconds, and a maximum of 191 km/h is possible. The manufacturer specifies the electric range as 62 kilometers – above average compared to the competition. In city traffic, the Koreans still expect 12 extra kilometers. The CO2 emissions are 31 grams per kilometer.

The compact Tucson is also available with a plug

Both SUVs very similar

The almost 4,80 meter long Santa Fe is now a class higher as a plug-in hybrid. Its special feature: as one of only a few plug-in hybrid SUVs, it is available as an optional seven-seater - although the traction battery takes up additional space in the rear. When driving the Santa Fe uses the same configuration as the smaller Tucson, also has all-wheel drive and automatic. The 13,8 kWh of the underbody battery is enough for 58 standard kilometers, and according to the manufacturer there are another ten kilometers extra in city traffic.

Electricity is supplied via a 3,3 kW on-board charger, and according to the manufacturer, the storage tank is filled at the socket after 8,5 hours at the latest. When it comes to performance, the heavier Santa Fe falls behind slightly compared to the smaller Tucson: a maximum of 187 km/h is possible, the sprint to 100 km/h takes 8,8 seconds, and CO2 emissions are 34 grams per kilometer. The basic model for 55.750 euros offers equipment including 19-inch rims, LED lights and navigation.

With the new plug-in hybrids, the two Hyundai SUVs now have two of the widest drive ranges in the SUV camp. In addition to the part-time electric vehicles, there are nine other engine variants for the Tucson, including full hybrids and mild hybrids in addition to conventional diesel and petrol engines. The larger Santa Fe offers both diesel and full hybrid options. The Koreans now also offer a broad portfolio in other series, which also includes battery-electric models and hydrogen cars.
