Test: Hyundai i30 combi 1.6 CRDi

The Hyundai i30 station wagon offers a lot of potential to make families and other users happy. But there is a catch.

The compact class was for a long time the segment of reason, which brought a decent space with reasonable prices in line. But over the years, the arms race in this class has made the vehicles more technically complex and luxurious. This trend can be impressively experienced, for example, with the Hyundai i30 station wagon we tested in the top version. This offers almost everything that the motorist heart desires. But that costs.

With almost 4,60 meter length of the Hyundai i30 estate is a stately appearance

Compact class in big

Although the i30 belongs to the compact class, but with almost 4,60 meter length, the stately combo version of this segment has actually outgrown a bit. Visually, the Korean wants to be more than just a bread-and-butter mobile. Chrome jewelery, various character lines or modern LED lights flatter the eye together with metallic paint and wheel rims. Korea Baroque? That was once. The 2017-launched i30 is up-to-the-minute and thoroughly European.

With room for 1.650 liters of luggage, the Hyundai i30 is in touch with a mid-range suit

At eye level with the VW Golf

In addition to a Golf Estate, the i30 station wagon can be seen unquestionably. The same applies to the space inside. The standard trunk space is similarly spacious with 602 liters as that of the competitor from Wolfsburg. Thanks to the easy-to-convert 60: 40 convertible backrest can become 1.650 liter and thus even 30 liters more than the VW. Thanks to the intermediate floor, there is a low loading sill and the luggage compartment on one level. Under the false floor, a box with a perfect fit offers further storage options. Also practical are the wide-opening tailgate, bag hooks and other locking functions as well as an 12-Volt socket and the sub-compartment stowable separation net. Are there any wishes left? Not quite. We have missed a compartment for the removable boot cover and the possibility to remotely unlock the backrest.

The instrument cluster has a larger color display between analogue round instruments

A homely car

Further up the i30 is also spacious and solid. On the back seat, even adult guests can travel comfortably, especially as the legs can be sorted sensibly, even with three-person occupancy thanks to the very shallow design of the tunnel. Also the headroom is lush at the back as in the front. There is also plenty of space thanks to several shelves and additional compartments for small items. The ambience deserves praise. Thanks to good workmanship and some chic materials, the i30 is a homely car. Only the partial leather seat covers showed slight distortions, especially in the area of the seams in several places. You have already seen that better. The instrument cluster is classically analogue, but the workplace still looks modern and ergonomically balanced. Nice is the center console, thanks to the electric parking brake waived a disturbing lever. Instead, the cup holders, usually not eye-catching, can be hidden with a roller blind element.

Versatile talent: the infotainment system with 8 inch touch screen and GPS navigation

Apple CarPlay and Android car included

If you invest accordingly, there is a touch screen in the center of the dashboard for the versatile talented infotainment system, which can be easily connected to a smartphone via Android car or Apple Carplay. Accordingly, smartphone apps can be displayed via the screen. However, the Navi package also belonged to the equipment, which already integrated all important functions. Mobile phones can be charged via USB port in the center console, but only one at the same time.

Convincing engine-gearbox combination

A force is the 100 kW / 136 PS strong 1,6-liter diesel in combination with the seven-speed dual-clutch DCT. For a diesel, the unit remains acoustically usually restrained, while the transmission switches nimble and smooth between the seven gear ratios back and forth. In almost every driving situation, a full torque is available, which gives the feeling of a brisk drive. The sprint takes 10,1 seconds, with a maximum of 200 km / h in it. According to the speedometer you can easily reach them, often the needle can be driven one or two fives. Even at top speed, the roadholding of the suspension, which is sufficiently comfortable in virtually all situations, is reassuring. The noise level remains pleasantly low even at 160 km / h. The same applies to the fuel consumption, at least with restrained driving. Compared with the NEDC reading of 4,4 liters, the practical impact is then one liter higher. If you drive particularly fast on the highway, you can drive the fuel consumption to over seven liters.

Chic rear: The elegant tail lights are split in two and extend into the tailgate

Helpful assistants

In addition to chassis, noise reduction and automatic, some helpers of the i30 provide for a superior comfort experience. Largely inconspicuous works the Abstandstempomat, which sometimes slows down unnecessarily only on construction sites and also accelerates again with a slight delay. On the other hand exaggerated exactly it takes the track holder, which intervenes again and again in the steering, although you see no reason for it as a driver. All in all, the assistance systems in their entirety ensure a high level of safety, which was worth five stars to the crash experts at the EuroNCAP.

The design of the Hyundai i30 should be good for the European car enthusiast

Family combo, very classic

Especially for families, the Hyundai i30 station wagon offers a cornucopia of will-and-miss facets that one must, however, be able to afford. Who expects a Hyundai a bargain tariff, could be surprised about a price of nearly 33.000 euro possibly. Then you get the strong diesel with the fine DCT in the lavish equipped equipment Premium, for which only a few additional options are available. Fully equipped, the price rises to just over 36.000 Euro. Most families afford this luxury, if at all, only after the house has been paid off.
