Test: Jeep Renegade 1.0 l T-GDI

For asphalt cowboys and girls

As a child, you were usually allowed to play outside freely and uncontrollably. Today, the memory of this freedom and freedom is to be generated with the help of SUVs, such as the Jeep Renegade. Depending on the engine choice you can play here but only on the street.

The Renegade is the smallest SUV in the German Jeep portfolio. The 2014-meter-long American, which has been available since 4,26, was refreshed only last spring and received a technical update in the fall, including new gasoline engines. The entry-level unit is now an 1,0-liter three-cylinder with 88 kW / 120 PS. This is only available with front-wheel drive and costs from 20.700 Euro. Our test vehicle with the small petrol engine drove in the Limited equipment and costs already at least 25.200 Euro. In this highest level of comfort for the front-wheel drive variants include, inter alia, two-zone climate control, various assistants, 17-Zöller, keyless access, infotainment system and a folding rear seat back to the standard.

New on board are several assistance systems

While die-hard fans may be nagging, many Renegade customers are fond of the typical Jeep design but do not need four-wheel drive or off-road capability; they consciously renounce values for which the long-established company has been almost synonymous for decades.

When it comes to looks, the little one does not have to hide behind his bigger brothers. The beefy front with the seven brand-typical slots in the radiator grille, the large Alus and the angular shape already make something and underline his claim to be no SUVchen. That the Renegade shares with the Fiat 500X technology and assembly lines, you can at least not look at him. The interior benefited from the refreshing measures last spring. Less hard plastic, more shelves, a modified center console and a modern infotainment system have arrived. The latter had no problems with either Apple or Android smartphones, integrated them quickly and reliably. Whether you need the extra charge navigation system (1.090 Euro), which comes with an 8,4 inch large display, given Google Maps and Co. remains a matter of opinion.

Views or backseat should be the seats. Where not too long drivers and companions can settle relaxed on the stalls, long-legged inmates quickly feel the not too generous cut seat cushions. Points can be after all, by a standard seat heating. And the hands even warms the steering wheel heating. Quite SUV-typical you can enjoy the slightly higher seating position not only when driving, but also when getting in and out.

New on board are several assistance systems. The high-beam and lane departure warning systems as well as the blind spot warning device are convincing, even though the warning of possible dangers from unclear angles takes place in an extremely shrill tone. Always be attentive when observing the traffic signs and not rely on the appropriate hint. In our vehicle this recognized only signs, which stand on highways or federal highways. On other streets he alternately displayed 30 or 70 signs on the display - no matter where you were driving in or out of town. Perhaps it was forgotten to deposit traffic signs for highways and localities in the system?

Luckily we can still read ourselves, so that the exits with the vehicle were compliant with traffic law. Especially since the three-cylinder turbo does not suffer from temperament, at least as long as you keep it in a good mood. Thanks to the smooth manual six-speed transmission, this was not a problem. If you move with at least 1.750 revolutions - here lies the maximum torque of 190 Nm - the small turbo acts very agile. However, the would-be cowboys and girls should not overdo it on their rides over the tarmac, because the engine is quickly thirsty. The standard value of 6,1 liters was not realizable even with very restrained driving style, with gentle gas foot we managed an average consumption of 8,1 liters. This is certainly also noticeable that a Renegade was not necessarily developed to aerodynamic specifications.

By the way: Of course, this Jeep is also available with all-wheel drive in line with the company's tradition. The two 2,0-liter diesels with 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS are only delivered with 4 × 4 technology. If you prefer a petrol engine with all-wheel drive, you have to wait a little longer. A 180 hp engine is about to be launched and will probably expand the range of engines for the small jeep in summer.
