Volvo V90 Cross Country - elegance on bad roads

Whom Volvos Upper class SUV XC90 is too massive, should now find it again with the Swedes. The V90 Cross Country continues the tradition of the off-road station wagon XC70, but interprets it in a more noble way. The market launch takes place in February at prices from 56.300 euros.

Visually, the Cross Country sets itself apart from the normal V90 business combination with underride protection, striking planking on the flanks and a special roof rail. In addition, there is increased ground clearance by six centimeters to a total of 21 centimeters. The all-wheel drive, which is always standard, cannot be seen.

As robust as the Cross Country looks from the outside, it presents itself as noble in the interior, which, including the large touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, is identical to the "normal" estate version. The available motors are also known from the sister models. In the four-wheel drive combined two diesel and gasoline engines are available, covering a performance spectrum from 140 kW / 190 PS to 235 kW / 320 PS and are offered only in conjunction with the eight-speed automatic transmission. In particular, the larger D5 diesel with 173 kW / 235 PS made a powerful impression with impressive 400 Nm torque, which was only reduced by excessive test consumption of 9,3 liters (standard specification 5,3 liters). The smaller D4 diesel (140 kW / 190 PS) with 5,2 liters is the prime saver according to the standard cycle.

In terms of security, the Cross Country does not allow itself to be weak. In addition to the numerous optional assistance systems up to the semi-autonomous "Drive Pilot", there is also an emergency brake assistant with pedestrian and cyclist detection during the day and at night. The system even helps to avoid collisions with large wild animals.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country is available in two trim levels. Even the base rolls on with leather seats, front seat heating, automatic climate control and LED headlights. The Pro equipment, which costs 4.200 euros each, also includes LED fog lights with cornering lights, 19-inch alloy wheels and an automatically opening tailgate. (Michael Lennartz)
