VW loses and wins

The classic Golf is becoming less important at VW. Other models could take its place.

In the EU market as a whole, VW has lost its position at the top of the bestseller list. In terms of e-mobiles, however, the Wolfsburg-based company took the first two places, as the April statistics from the consulting firm Jato show. Accordingly, the ID4 electric SUV was the most popular model in the Schengen countries with 7.335 units, followed by the ID3 with 5.735 units. The Renault Zoe landed in third place with 4.015 new registrations.

A total of 27 all-electric cars were newly registered in the 71.500 states. There were also 81.500 plug-in hybrids; The bestseller in this drive segment was the Ford Kuga with 4.171 new registrations, ahead of the Volvo XC40 (3.798) and Peugeot 3008 (3.507).

With the conventional models, VW has lost its traditional leadership position. With 17.763 new registrations, the Golf only landed third on the bestseller list in April. At the top were the Peugeot models 208 and 2008 with 18.387 and 18.328 units, respectively. Last but not least, the success of the ID3, which is poaching as a new competitor in the golf area, plays a role. The same applies to the likewise relatively new SUV models ID4, T-Roc and T-Cross. Last but not least, with Brexit, a statistically important market with a large share of the compact class collapsed.
