World premiere in New York: MAZDA MX-5 RF

Mazda presents the Mazda MX-5 variant with retractable hardtop on the eve of the New York Auto Show!

With the retractable hardtop, the Mazda MX-5 becomes a sporty coupé when closed. So purely in terms of optics. Electrically opened, the MX-5 remains what it was: a “sleek” sports roadster.

Drive open, interpreted more practically

There are very practical reasons for ordering the MX-5 with a “hardtop” or a sheet metal folding roof. Once again, Mazda thinks differently than its competitors. Offering a small roadster with a fabric roof is the fulfillment of the puristic demands. Bringing the MX-5 onto the market with a “retractable hardtop” fulfills the wishes of the “practically” inclined “all-year-round roadster drivers”.

RF stands for "Retractable Fastback"

The hardtop, whose visual proximity to a “fastback” is clearly visible, can be lowered up to a speed of 10 km / h. That is enough to roll off quickly at the traffic lights or to use the time in the parking lot and close the roof while parking.

Now open automatically

Mazda is now playing the “more comfortable” aspect of the hardtop roadster with an automatic version of the MX-5 RF. Under the bonnet, the 160 hp unit with a two-liter displacement, known from the roadster with a fabric roof, throbbing. But only for the “RF” there is also a six-speed automatic in the selection.

Gray instead of colorful

If the impressive red tones of the Mazda range attract too much attention, you will also be pleased with the “Machine Gray” color scheme that is now available.

This subtly elegant and at the same time high-quality color tone consists of three layers: a color layer, a reflective layer with extremely thin, light aluminum flakes and a clear coat. The aluminum flakes provide the deep finish, the shimmering light and the metallic look, while visible deep black pigments in the paint and reflective layer give the paint a black touch and enhance the contrasting effect.

It is not yet certain when the Mazda MX-5 RF will come to the market. Autumn would be a good time for the roadster with its integrated hardtop.
