The global shortage of semiconductors is spoiling the summer business for automakers. And bargain hunting for customers.
The number of new cars on offer is falling, as is the level of discounts. Due to the production downtimes in the course of the chip crisis, the car manufacturers saved themselves the sales promotion through discounts in May, as the Center Automotive Research (CAR) in Duisburg found out. The monthly discount index has been reduced by one point to 129 points compared to the previous month.
The shortage of semiconductors affects almost all car manufacturers worldwide. The CAR anticipates that around three million cars worldwide will not be able to be produced this year. For Germany, the experts calculate with 200.000 missing vehicles. According to the CAR, the deficiency will only really become noticeable in sales and approvals in the second half of the year.
