Welcome back, Marty McFly

You have to get used to thinking in four dimensions.” “That’s right, I have real problems with that.”

Today is the day Marty McFly will arrive in the future. Marty McFly, Doctor Emmet Brown, and a DeLorean converted into a time machine. Hollywood entertainment in three parts. Part 1 came out in 1985. I was 10 years old then. I probably saw the first part when I was 11 when the film came out on VHS. Cars were my passion at the time. Hollywood filmmakers' ideas of the future can be seen in the films. But - how did I imagine the future as an 11-year-old?

The cars of the future - 30 years later

We don't need roads wherever we go, Part 1 of the film triology ends like this: Back to the Future. Flying cars? No – I never imagined it like that. Cars that fly are called airplanes. It was always clear to me that cars drive on roads. I started “painting” cars around the age of 10. And there were always models that looked a little like him DeLorean by Doc Emmett Brown.

BACK-IN-THE-FUTURE III back-to-the-future-III

But my cars have always touched the road under my wheels.

Unfortunately, the “drawings” from my early childhood years no longer exist. I painted entire blocks. Often they were cars that were blessed with the bumpers of the W140. The “Sacco boards” of the S-Class (W140) influenced me just as much as the DeLorean.

It was clear to me early on that cars would be able to drive themselves. Maybe that was also due to the influence of Knight Rider. Cars that are moving computers that you can talk to. That was very clear to me as a “Steppke”. That will come. I haven't thought about drive technology yet. V8, V12, V10, W16 – these were the engines in my cars. So clearly influenced by the top models of the time. For example, there was the “vector w16“. One of my cars looked like one back then S-Class (W140), but I missed a W16 rear engine. And of course wing doors like the DeLorean. That this car could talk to the driver - sure.

Yes - the car fantasies of a 12 year old.

30 years later I see it all a little differently. What, flying cars? I still don't see them. There were always studies and individual pieces. But seriously, people as drivers can't even use the indicator correctly and internalize the right-hand driving requirement - how are you supposed to think about "flying"?

Talking cars

If you see the intelligence that is in “smartphones” today and how well we can communicate with Google and Siri from Apple, then usable “voice control” should no longer be a distant future. How cars could speak to the environment in the future is also up to us Mercedes-Benz study F015 shown! And even if I don't like the "tin soap", there's probably a KOncept vehicle is definitely a study of how mobility in the future must understand.

Self-driving cars

That was also a TV highlight back then. KITT could already drive himself and even talk, and whenever Micheal Knight spoke into his “smartwatch”, no one knew at the time that he was wearing a smartwatch, then “KITT came around the corner. We're not quite there yet. In the very near future, our cars will be able to park themselves. We will soon have cars that will be at least partially autonomous. I have no doubts about that and even if the “TESLA experiment” with the “autopilot” initially looks like it is going to fail - as soon as the automobile manufacturers and suppliers have increased the package of sensors, autonomous cars will become safer drive than 99% of all other road users.

time machine

Well – even if you get a Delorean from mobile.de (for example) for a good €30.000, it still lacks a flux compensator. Time travel in a car? That was the really brilliant idea behind “Back to the Future”. As a car blogger, I will probably have to plan my personal time trips differently. Whereby – the Drive in the rally Skoda 130 RS together with Matthias Kahle, it was almost like a journey through time.

Tonight Part III is coming up: Back to the future

Maybe there will be new ideas for the automobile of the future ...

And these colleagues were also looking forward to Marty McFly (I think):
