27 million fewer cars by 2029

The auto industry suffers from the shortage of microchips. In addition, from next year battery cell production will no longer meet demand. The number of new cars is likely to fall sharply.

In global car production, a shortage of semiconductor chips and, from next year, a shortage of battery cells, mean that new car production will be reduced. According to a prognosis by the Center Automotive Research (CAR), this problem is likely to persist for years and by the end of the decade will result in a total shortage of new vehicles by almost 27 million cars.

Only from 2024 do the experts around study leader Ferdinand Dudenhöffer expect chip manufacturing capacities with which the demand of the car manufacturers will be adequately met. According to the forecast, the chip as a bottleneck factor alone will cause a shortage in world car production of 2023 million cars by 8,1.

The production of lithium-ion cells will not meet demand until next year and will have a correspondingly negative effect on car production. Dudenhöffer does not expect sufficient cell production capacities to be available until 2030. Until then, he predicts a shortage of new cars of 18,7 million cars for this reason alone.
