Mazda2 Type DE (2007-14)

The Mazda2 is available for well under 3.000 euros. It therefore offers an attractive price-performance ratio. But the small car also has weaknesses.

If you are looking for a good and cheap small car, you will probably come across the Mazda2 at some point. Like some of its brand brothers, even the smallest Mazda has a long-running image. Although the Mazda2007 built between 2014 and 2 is considered a rock-solid small car, the problem areas are increasing due to its advancing age. Anyone who discourages high mileage will find specimens with moderate mileage for less than 3.000 euros. However, a six-digit odometer reading is by no means a killer criterion.

The Mazda2007 built between 2014 and 2 is a bit older, but it still looks contemporary

Body and interior of the Mazda2 (2007-2014):

At 3,89 meters, the Mazda2 is one of the more compact representatives in the Small car segment, With a weight of around one ton, it is also a lightweight. One cannot expect miracles in terms of space economy: in the front you sit comfortably on long-distance chairs. If the guests are medium-sized, there is also enough space in the rear. Up to 250 liters of luggage can fit in the trunk. With the rear seat folded down, it is almost 800 liters high. The Mazda2 was offered as a two- and a four-door. If you are traveling with children, it is better to look for models with additional rear doors.

The chassis of the Mazda2 offers a somewhat indifferent, but perfectly acceptable compromise of comfort and agility for everyday use - but at the level of a small car. Some testers have criticized the base as too tight and its turning circle as large. In the summer of 2010, the Mazda2 received a subtle facelift in which, among other things, the front bumper was redesigned.

Mazda2 engines (2007-2014):

As usual for city cars, the focus of the Mazda2 is on the petrol engines. Those who prefer a more leisurely driving style can get by with the 1,3-liter unit, which is available with 55 kW / 75 PS and 62 kW / 84 PS. One is already quite brisk with the 75 kW / 102 hp 1,5 liter petrol engine. The powerful petrol engine alone can be obtained in the extremely rare automatic version on the used market. In the first two model years, the Mazda2 was also offered with a 50 kW / 68 hp 1,4 liter diesel and from then on with a 1,6 liter diesel with 70 kW / 95 hp. Both diesel engines are modest with just over 4 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. The petrol engines consume a good one to two liters more. In the case of top petrol, the consumption will be around eight liters per 100 kilometers.

The workplace in the Mazda2 is tidy, but many hard plastic surfaces appear somewhat brittle

Features and safety of the Mazda2 (2007-2014):

With up to six airbags and the ESP anti-skid device, the Mazda2 offers safety equipment that is respectable even from today's perspective. Accordingly, it was enough in 2007 for the Euro NCAP crash test for a maximum score of five stars. With regard to the additional equipment, the search for higher quality variants such as Independence, Impression or Dynamic is worthwhile in view of the lean basic version Impuls. These can also come up with niceties such as air conditioning, window regulators, CD radio, leather steering wheel, cruise control or seat heating in the front. However, even classy models do not hide the hard plastic surfaces of the interior, which appear somewhat coarse in places.

The trunk of the Mazda2 can hold 250 liters

Mazda2 quality (2007-2014):

Basically, the Mazda2 is a solid small car - even in old age. Its endurance qualities underline, among other things, a quite high number of used copies with a mileage of well over 200.000 kilometers. The defect rate in the TÜV report remains well below the segment average across all age groups, although the average mileage of the specimens examined is also lower on average. In the main examinations, however, specific foci of defects have emerged. This includes the steering, in which the joints can show signs of wear relatively early, which is noticeable among other things by suspicious noises when maneuvering. Other chassis components such as springs, dampers and axle suspension are also frequently criticized during TÜV visits. The wheel bearings are also said to be susceptible to wear. A critical look at the Mazda2 is also recommended with regard to possible rust spots.

And finally ... For a vehicle in its price range that is Mazda2 a real model boy. If you want a fairly agile and fairly economical city flea and don't have too much to transport, you'll be happy with the Japanese. Well-preserved examples with less than 3.000 kilometers are currently available on the popular used car exchanges for around 100.000 euros. It is also much cheaper.
