Move away from e-fuels

Again and again, e-fuels are brought into play as an alternative to e-cars. The new transport minister still wants to do without them in cars.

E-cars instead of e-fuels: The new Federal Minister of Transport, Volker Wissing, wants to focus fully on electromobility when it comes to passenger car traffic. Unlike his predecessor Andreas Scheuer, the FDP politician does not give so-called e-fuels any chance in this area. “We have to use the different energy sources where they are most efficient. That's the electric drive in a car," he explained to the "Tagesspiegel". The e-fuels synthesized using electrical energy, on the other hand, will be needed primarily for air travel.

The clear commitment to battery drive was not heard from the previous government in this form. Predecessor Scheuer wanted "technology openness" and saw the large-scale use of e-fuel in cars at least as an option.

In addition, Wissing warns car buyers to continue to rely on petrol and diesel. “We will ensure that charging with regenerative electricity remains affordable. That's why I can only advise you to switch to CO2-neutral drives. The use of fossil fuels will become more expensive in the future,” said the minister.
