The Italian alternative to golf and co. Goes by the name Giulietta. In order to remain the “attractive alternative”, Alfa Romeo has upgraded the 2014 model year with fine details. Above all, a new engine storms. The changes in the look meanwhile remain subtle.

The changes at a glance

It is a clear facelift for the young Giulia. With a new diesel engine, an upgraded interior and only slight retouching at the front. Small steps that enhance the offer, but not devalue the already sold models.

The new diesel

With the new 2.0 JTDM 16V, 150 HP and 380 Nm are now available. This corresponds to an increase in output of 10 hp and an increase in power of 30 Nm. But more power does not have to go hand in hand with thirst - in the case of the Giulia, the consumption of the revised engine even dropped: the standard consumption is now 4.2l per 100 km, which corresponds to a minus of 0.3 liters.

With the efficiency class A, the fast-paced Italian also convinces in terms of cost-effectiveness.

That's how the 150 PS Giulia goes

Unobtrusive in the noise, authentic in the suit. The 150 PS diesel variant does not completely hide itself acoustically, but it does not become unpleasant. It is a sonorous diesel hum that can be pushed into the background on long stretches of the motorway. As usual, the new diesel engine sends its power to a manual six-speed gearbox. With a little good will and a run-up, a top speed of 210 km / h is feasible. The JTDM diesel depends well on the gas, but the gearshift travel of the transmission is not always clearly defined and every now and then the desire for a little more “precision” arises.

The steering convinces with emotional feedback and although the front axle now has to be powerful with 380 Nm of force, you can only feel little power in the steering in everyday driving.

Interior with plus

The front seats has reshaped Alfa Romeo, thereby increasing the seating comfort as well as the lateral support. In addition to the now optionally refined with leather dashboard, the new infotainment system plays the lead role in the Giulietta for the new model year.

Alfa Romeo offers two versions for the Giulia. The basic version of the “uconnect” system has a 5 inch touch screen. Bluetooth and voice control are already included in this variant. In addition to the ability to stream music from your mobile phone via Bluetooth, the basic version can also read out text messages. This Info-Multimedia-MP3-Handy-Touch-Version is networked with the most important control units of the car. In this way, vehicle data (eco, fuel, etc.) can be called up.

If you upgrade the uconnect system with navigation and DAB, you will also receive an 6.5 inch touchscreen.

You can combine the multimedia package with a sound system from BOSE. Here then 10 loudspeakers throw the beats around the ears.

The rest stays as usual

Nobler ambience in the interior, the strengthened diesel engine and outside a few detail changes that would not have even noticed the experienced autoblogger eye. In addition to the 150 PS Diesel Alfa Romeo offers four petrol engines from 105 PS to 235 PS and three diesel from 105 PS to 170 PS. The 170 PS diesel engine will also undergo a revision, but this is only 5 PS strong. And from November there will also be the Alfa TCT dual-clutch transmission for the then 175 PS strong diesel. In the gasoline, the 1.4 liter is large and 170 PS strong MultiAir with TCT available.

Three equipment lines are retained. The entry is made by the version Impression, followed by the Veloce version and the popular with Alfa buyers Turismo variant.

For sports fans, Alfa Romeo still has the “Quadrifoglio Verde” variant ready. Since these are only available with the 235 hp turbo gasoline engine, I would not just refer to the top model as an “equipment variant”. 29.950 euros are in the price list for the 242 km / h Giulia.

The attractive 150 hp diesel is available in the Veloce version from € 25.900. The entry into the Italian Golf alternative is the basic 105 hp petrol engine with the Impression equipment: € 19.250 is due for this.
