Natural gas is also a loser

Electric cars are booming, and demand for combustion engines is falling. And that doesn't just apply to gasoline and diesel engines.

The demand for gasoline and diesel vehicles fell sharply in the first quarter of 2021. However, gas-powered cars were hit even harder. As the statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) show, the number of new registrations decreased by 44 percent compared to the same period last year. With 1.206 new registrations, they only achieved a market share of 0,2 percent.

The gasoline engine lost 30 percent in the first quarter and had almost 252.000 new registrations or a market share of 38 percent. The number of new diesel cars fell by 29 percent to 158.000 units, which was enough for a market share of 24 percent. Together, the classic combustion engines had a market share of 62 percent. A year ago it was 83 percent.

The winners of the past three months were e-mobiles. New registrations for all-battery cars increased by 150 percent to 65.000 units, and for plug-in hybrids (PHV) by 195 percent to 78.000. The market shares of the drive types were 10 (e-mobiles) and 12 percent (PHV).

Overall were in the first quarter of this year. 656.452 new cars registered in Germany. Compared to the same period last year, this corresponds to a minus of 6,5 percent.
