Audi RS e-Tron - New details on the Audi R8 successor

The days of the Ingolstadt sports car Audi R8 seem numbered. Experts have been saying for some time that the Audi RS e-Tron will be the successor to the Audi R8. An all-electric supercar that shares the Porsche Taycan's J1 platform. The Croatian sports car manufacturer Rimac is also under discussion. With his knowledge of the electric sports car, he can contribute a lot of technical know-how to the Audi Supercar RS e-Tron.

An Audi R8 successor?

Audi development boss Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler said in an interview with car magazine: “Audi Sport must have electromobility. Our brand icons must become electric. We are discussing the sporty cars and the RS vehicles - they will need a shift towards electromobility."

In order to be sporty, the electric R8 must be able to keep up with the acceleration times of the electric sports cars that are already available. Audi speaks of less than three seconds for acceleration to 100 km/h. All-wheel drive will also be passed on. With the Audi R8 successor, they aim for a range of 500 kilometers with the new R8. The magazine car wants to know that the e-tron with an output of 950 hp from four electric motors is coming onto the market. It also has a wireless charging function.

The successor to the Audi R8 is to be built in Neckarsulm in the "Bollinger Hofe“. In order to keep financial expenses within limits, large parts of the development are outsourced to Rimac. The idea is to have Rimac supply the four-motor powertrain and fast-charging batteries for the EV sports coupe.

Audi RS e-Tron or Audi e-Tron GTR?

Other sources speak of another naming for the R8. You always read the designation e-Tron GTR. But until the R8 successor appears, the new one should be available by the end of 2020 Audi eTron GT to get presented. A four-seater grand tourer, also based on the Porsche Taycan J1 platform.

The RS e-Tron or e-Tron GTR is currently just a tame paper tiger. Many things still come from the automotive rumor mill. However, if Audi is serious about its slogan "Vorsprung durch Technik", then it is high time to put these words into practice and present the Audi R8 successor.
