Audi S5 Coupé - The price of beauty

So one says: The woman (either: the man) of his life you do not meet in the disco or on Tinder, but in the supermarket or in the neighboring office. Meaning, love comes when you least expect it. It was a bit like that with us Audi S5. Why this? Actually should come to the test a Q2, so the new small compact SUV of Ingolstadt. But the "accident" as it is called today in bad official German and we were offered instead just the S5. Of course we did not have to think about that for long.

All-wheel drive is always on board

And then the surprising guest was already there and what should we say, it was love at first sight. Even the predecessor was a classically beautiful car, the new one is undoubtedly even and in detail even more successful. The line runs more harmoniously, the body seams are sharper, the LED headlights look more dynamic. It does not take much to predict: this vehicle will seduce the senses as a classic in ten and twenty years or more.

Of course, this does not only apply to the S5, but to the A5 series as a whole, but of course the S shows some small differences, which one can reorder for the Normalo models at most as an optical package in the category "More appearances than being". The S5 is quite different and looks exactly as he wants to be driven.

And of course, at this point, we have to come to the engine, that fine turbo petrol engine, which fits the sensual look like the well-trained heart-lung system of an 100 meter runner to its appearance - if the comparison is allowed. The six-cylinder draws from its three-liter displacement potent 260 kW / 354 PS. The default numbers are: 4,7 and 250 - you know what we mean. But above all, the 500 unit provides Newton meters of torque, which alone would not be worth mentioning. But they are between 1.370 and 4.500 RPM, so always. Driving pleasure is guaranteed, especially since the S5 is always combined with the Quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The collaboration works perfectly perfect.

It's just a shame that the engine is not only driving it acoustically unnecessarily in dynamic mode (but even more there). Although the present pretzel and humming of the drive actually does quite well with its potency after starting, the coupé would not have needed so much onomatopoeic support. Shapes and lines, wheels and grille with the subtle S5 reference would be sufficient. Also because you can drive this Audi very relaxed and reserved. Sure, the curve taken as quickly as possible is his real job, but his suspension is so skilfully tuned that you can take the S5 for the longest drive and get off at your destination in a relaxed manner. Incidentally, thanks to the great, standard heated and electrically adjustable front sports seats.

Incidentally, one should not conclude from the latter information on a too lush standard equipment. Sure, the base price of 62.500 Euro is more than just the formidable engine (sports) suspension-gearbox four-wheel drive combination. But you can expect LED light, climate control, an emergency brake assistant or 18 inch wheels at this price. Our test car effortlessly passed the 90.000 Euro limit.

But that did not bother us in the end. And always complaining about the price of German premiums, brings in the end, so synonymous nothing. The cars sell themselves either way as sliced ​​bread. Only two things really bothered us at the S5. On the one hand, we were surprised by loud wind noises at about 60 km / h at the window of the passenger side. This fits in with such an expensive car of a brand that is still considered the king of interior quality, not at all. On the other hand, the long doors in everyday life are a big disadvantage. In hardly a parking garage was enough space to be able to leave the car accident-free through the narrow gap with half open door. That's what you call the price of beauty.

But we would have a solution for that. For the same price as the coupe, there are the Sportback with four doors, which are naturally not only shorter, but also possibly enjoy the rear riders. Because the entry into the rear is the two-door only for children a pleasure. In addition, the rear seat or footwell in front of it can be used much more conveniently for shopping. And then, of course, there is another possibility: put 5.300 Euro on it and buy the S5 as a convertible. Then you can leave your vehicle in doubt sometimes with an elegant flank jump over the door.
