Audi S8 - The flagship remains with the gasoline engine

While Audi is now opting for diesel in its smaller sports models for reasons of efficiency, the flagship S8 has a petrol engine that is responsible for strong driving performance and prestige.

In its largest S model, Audi continues to rely on the petrol engine: the new edition of the sports version of the luxury sedan comes with a 4,0-liter biturbo V8 petrol engine. The athlete, over five meters long, can be ordered from autumn; delivery will take place towards the end of the year.

While the smaller S models have recently switched to more economical diesel, the S8, which was developed especially for the export markets, sticks to the traditional gasoline engine. The eight-cylinder engine delivers 420 kW / 571 hp and a torque of 800 Nm, coupled with eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. To reduce the consumption of the drive, Audi used a mild hybrid system based on 48 volts, in which an electric motor supports the combustion engine when starting and accelerating. The V8 also deactivates some of its cylinders when not in use.

The active air suspension with the front camera is offset so that the S8 can bring its power to the road in a sporty but also comfortable manner. If these bumps are noticed, the undercarriage adapts to them in advance. In addition, each wheel can be individually pushed up or down by electric motors, which should minimize body roll in bends or during load changes. All-wheel steering and a sport differential on the rear axle are also standard, and a carbon-ceramic brake replaces the standard disc at an additional cost.

Audi is relaunching the S8

Audi is launching its full range of assistance systems. The manufacturer counted 38 individual functions, including autonomous driving functions and a side accident detector, which lifts the flank in the event of an impending collision so that the opposing vehicle does not hit the soft door but the robust sill.

Visually, the S8 is reserved, only distinguishes itself from the A8 by details on the bumper and the side mirrors as well as silver exterior mirror housings. In China, the USA, Canada and South Korea, the top model can also be recognized by its length; only the version with a large wheelbase stretched to 5,30 meters is offered there. In Europe, one is satisfied with the 5,17 meter standard model. The Ingolstadt-based company has not yet mentioned prices, but they should start in the range of 120.000 euros.
