Car credit atlas: Germans are borrowing more and more money for cars

The Germans take ever larger loans for the buying cars on. This shows a consideration of all car loans taken out via CHECK24. While customers borrowed an average of EUR 17.419 from the bank last year, it was EUR 16.456 the year before – an increase of six percent. Compared to 2017, it is even 25 percent more - the average car loan amount at that time was only 13.901 euros.1

Major cities: Munich, Frankfurt a. M. and Stuttgart with the highest car loan amounts

A comparison of the major German cities shows that people in Munich lend the highest car loan amounts. Car buyers from the Bavarian capital need an average of 20.115 euros to finance a vehicle - 15 percent more than the national average (17.419 euros). In the 15 largest German cities, consumers from Frankfurt a. M. (Ø 19.881 euros) and Stuttgart (Ø 19.458 euros) also have large loans. Dresdeners, on the other hand, have the lowest credit requirements (average 14.603 euros) - 27 percent less than in Munich.

“High-income residents in large cities such as Munich, Frankfurt a. M. and Stuttgart borrow the most money”says Dr. Stefan Eckhardt, Managing Director Loans at CHECK24. "Because if you earn more, you also get more money from the bank for a more expensive vehicle."

Federal state comparison: Highest car loans in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse

In a federal state comparison, it is noticeable that borrowers from Baden-Württemberg borrow the highest sums from the bank for their car – on average 18.708 euros. Consumers from Hesse also borrow a comparatively large amount from the bank (Ø 18.681 euros). The lowest loans are taken out in Saxony (Ø 15.836 euros). Consumers from the eastern federal state borrow 15 percent less to buy a car than people from Baden-Württemberg.
