Autonomous parking assistants

If you don't like to park, you can let the car help you. But should bring enough time.

Automated parking assistants do not fill the gap as quickly as experienced drivers. In a test by the ADAC, the technology sometimes took up to two minutes to park.

However, the seven systems tested were largely convincing in terms of operation and reliability. The assistants work most comfortably in the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes S-Class, where the driver only has to confirm a parking space once. The vehicle then steers into it autonomously. The ADAC emphasizes, however, that the systems must be permanently monitored as specified by the manufacturers. Individual obstacles such as metal bars or high curbs are sometimes not reliably detected.

The benefits of the park assistants are manageable, but so are the costs. The systems usually use existing technology, such as the motors for the power steering and the sensors for monitoring the surroundings. They are therefore often part of the standard equipment, especially in larger vehicle classes. More complex assistants with mobile phone or key remote control can sometimes cost several thousand euros extra, but are then usually combined with additional convenience extras.
