BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé - notchback sedan for hipsters

With the new 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW is now adding a competitor to the Mercedes CLA. The sleek notchback sedan should appeal primarily to young customers - but not primarily in Germany.

BMW broadens the new compact family. For the first time there will also be a four-door 2-series Gran Coupé in the Munich entry-level series, as CEO Harald Krüger has now announced at the annual press conference. The apparently sleekly designed notchback sedan celebrates its premiere in November at the Auto Show in Los Angeles, and will be launched in spring 2020.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé was probably created primarily with an eye on the markets in China and the USA, where the comparable Mercedes CLA recently celebrated success with young buyers. The trend towards elegant notchback sedans is nothing new for BMW either; there is, among other things, a 4 Series Gran Coupé in the middle class.

Technically, the four-door 2 Series is based on the new front-wheel drive platform, which also carries the upcoming generation of the BMW 1 Series. The latter celebrates its premiere in autumn and will be supplemented by the higher-positioned 2-series models in the following months. In addition to the sedan, there may also be a coupe and possibly a convertible.
