BMW mild hybrid offensive

BMW relies heavily on the mild hybrid drive to reduce fuel consumption. The fleet of 48-volt models is expected to grow strongly by summer.

BMW is upgrading its engine range electrically. By the summer, 37 other diesel and gasoline models are to be equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, including variants from the 3, 5, 6 and 7 series as well as the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7. A total of 51 mild hybrids are then available from Munich.

The core element of the fuel-saving technology is an 8 kW / 11 PS belt starter, which relieves the combustion engine when starting up and accelerating and acts as a power generator when braking. This should reduce consumption, while at the same time improving responsiveness.

BMW does not say to what extent the prices for the vehicles will rise due to the additional technology. They don't do that with the newly relaunched 5 Series: The basic version remains at 48 euros despite new 49.100-volt components. However, it could look different with other models.
