Demand for charging points in Europe

Europe's car manufacturers are calling for the e-car infrastructure to be expanded quickly. Over a million charging points should be available by the middle of the decade.

The European car manufacturers association ACEA puts the need for e-car charging points in the EU at around one million by 2024. According to industry representatives, the demand will rise to three million by 2029. In addition, around 1.000 hydrogen filling stations are needed to achieve the goals of the EU Commission's “Green Deal” in the transport sector.

At the end of 2020 there were around 200.000 charging points in the EU, but the majority were concentrated in the four countries Germany, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. There are currently a good 33.000 charging points in Germany, and the federal government wants to have one million connected to the network by 2030.

The expansion of the charging network is considered to be the basis for the further spread of locally emission-free e-cars. Against this background, the ACEA advocates mandatory national expansion targets.
