A sporty coupe with high-capacity 8 cylinder engine and good equipment for the 50.000 Euro? No, no used cars, a new vehicle. What sounds like an offer from 15 years ago is up to date. Chevrolet has with the Camaro such a vehicle in the model range. Is there a catch and if yes, where is it?

First a little history. The Camara first entered 1966 American asphalt and has since sold over five million units. Anyone who buys the pony car is more fascinated by either the design and / or the engine and of course the price. In the sixth generation Chevrolet has found in his budget sportsman after some optical aberrations previously to a modern and yet typical form. Eight cylinders of 6,2 liter displacement, here the Camaro beats its only serious rival on the German market, the Ford Mustang, which has to squeeze its eight cylinders out of 5 liters of displacement. After starting the engine, the Camaro unit grumbles contentedly, then goes off the leash after the first time the accelerator pedal is pressed. The rear wheels quickly wrestle for traction. Who is fully pushed through vehemently pressed into the seats.

But the Camaro is a sports car as the Americans define it: big engine, plenty of power and straight ahead quickly. Even if the chassis are of course progressive today, cornering like - shall we say - in a BMW cannot be expected from a Camaro. Top speed on German autobahns is also not his thing. He lacks lightness and we as drivers lack confidence in his cornering stability. The vacuum cleaner, on the other hand, feels good at 160 things on the highway or at a leisurely 100 km / h - here also on a winding country road. Then you also hear something about the unfiltered thunder of the eight-cylinder. And the fuel consumption can also be at least curbed a little. Because those who constantly spur the pony can easily achieve consumption values ​​of around 20 liters for 100 kilometers. With a largely disciplined driving style, we still needed almost 15 liters on average.

Which brings us to the downsides of the good deal. A not inconsiderable part of the low base price is recouped over the years from high fuel consumption and relatively expensive insurance. At this point must therefore be pointed to the second available engine, because the Camaro is available not only in two body styles (Coupe and Cabriolet), but also in two engines. There is an alternative to a relatively modest 2,0-liter turbo gasoline engine with just four cylinders, automatic transmission and 275 horses. The course, of course, unlike the eights no 290 km / h top, but only 240 km / h. On the other hand, even the standard consumption is almost five liters below that of the manual 6,2-liter unit. In fact, it should be in practice rather six to seven liters, which is saved with admittedly less driving fun per 100 kilometers around a euro-ten.

And what else should you check before you fall in love with the Camaro: Where is the nearest dealer? To the best of our knowledge, there are no 20 in Germany that are allowed to carry out an inspection. It's worth taking a look at the map in advance. When that's settled, you can let your passion run wild. And that should not find fulfillment in high-speed orgies, nor in penny-pinch fuel-saving thoughts. For both the Camaro is conceivably unsuitable. But on a swift exit through narrow terrain, the American promises a very special, original experience that is hard to find today in this drive constellation.
