Chip crisis prevents discounts

The times for New car buyers stay bad: the supply is scarce and correspondingly expensive. Relief can only be expected in months, when the chip crisis improves.

The shortage of new cars is leading to the dwindling of discounts. This also registered in August Center Automotive Research (CAR) in Duisburg saw a decline in special promotions and other price reductions. The monthly published discount index fell by three to 125 points.

Expensive new cars thanks to the chip crisis

The experts observed, among other things, a decrease in car subscription offers by 31 to 380, the average discount level for the 30 most popular models fell on the Internet by 0,2 points to 17,7 percent. In addition, the number of self-registrations fell, which will ensure a lower supply of young used vehicles in the coming weeks.

According to the CAR forecast, German car buyers will have to pay an average of 36.500 euros in September for a typical new car. This means that the average price has risen by 360 euros since July. Institute director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer does not expect any relief for the coming months either. He expects the supply shortage due to the chip crisis to continue until mid-2022. Discounts are not expected in the next few months either.
