Citroën C5 X

C5 X is the name of the future flagship from Citroen. The new model should build on the brand's long tradition of comfortable sedans, but optically take a new direction.

Coupé, station wagon or SUV? With the new C5 X, customers do not have to make a clear commitment. Citroen's 2022 meter long D-segment five-door, available in Europe from the beginning of 4,80, is supposed to combine these genres, which are popular with car customers, in one vehicle. According to Citroen boss Vincent Cobée speaks of a new sub-segment given the idiosyncratic mix. With the future model, the French want to build on the long tradition of large and particularly comfortable models such as the legendary CX.

The C5 X, which is peppered with many of the brand's current design features, qualifies as an SUV with its high body and the robustness of the wheel arches and side skirts. Thanks to its flowing silhouette, however, the newcomer looks more elegant and dynamic than a typical SUV. Despite its sloping roof line, the space inside is generous. One of the reasons for this is the 2,79 meter long wheelbase, which provides plenty of legroom in the rear. The C5 X is primarily intended to inspire customers in China, where it is produced in the Chengdu plant. The 545 liter trunk, which increases to 1.640 liters when the rear seat back is folded down, is also generously dimensioned. For better usability, the luggage compartment offers several storage compartments, a flat floor, a low loading sill and flat side walls. If you have your hands full, you can also open the electric tailgate with a foot gesture.

The new C5 X should be characterized by comfort features in the tradition of the brand. Among other things, a refined variant of the Advanced Comfort active suspension with three selectable driving modes should help. The seats with upholstery reminiscent of mattress toppers with compressed structural foam are also intended to provide more comfort. In addition, Citroen promises increased acoustic comfort.

The cockpit of the new C5 X looks tidy and clear. In the center is a 12-inch touchscreen that serves as a display and user interface for the infotainment system and for many vehicle functions. Citroen promises an operating logic similar to that of tablets. Other highlights include a large panoramic glass roof, a large-format head-up display, an inductive charging cradle, voice recognition and wireless connectivity technology for smartphones. Equipped with radar, sensors and cameras, the new Nobel Citroen also has a large number of assistance systems on board and is prepared for advanced levels of autonomous driving.

Initially, the C5 X will compete in Europe with a 1,2-liter gasoline engine with 96 kW / 130 PS and a plug-in hybrid drive with 165 kW / 225 PS system output. The PHEV drive, already known from other PSA models, allows purely electric driving at up to 135 km / h and up to 50 kilometers thanks to its large traction battery. A fully electric drive variant is to follow later in the model cycle. Citroen has not yet announced prices for the C5 X, but these will probably be a lot higher than the C5 Aircross, which starts at around 26.000 euros.
