Climate-friendly steel from 2025

A car not only releases CO2 during operation, but also during production. With a new type of steel, Mercedes wants to reduce this in the future.  

Climate-friendly steel is to be used in series production of passenger cars from 2025 Mercedes be used. The sustainably manufactured material is supplied by the Swedish company SSAB, from which the Stuttgart-based company already purchases ecological steel for the production of prototypes. During production, the necessary forging heat is not generated with fossil fuels, as is usually the case, but with green hydrogen.  

Climate-friendly steel for more sustainability

In addition to Mercedes, competitor Volvo has also announced a partnership with SSAB, but has not yet published any concrete plans. According to earlier announcements, SSAB wants to start producing hydrogen steel on a large scale from 2026. Sustainable materials are generally in demand in the automotive industry. In addition to the switch to steel, Mercedes also plans to use resource-saving leather from 2023 and to develop animal-free alternatives.
