Consumption test: Volkswagen Polo BlueGT

Blue like the sky, blue like a violet, blue like the polo?

Above all, the color “blue” has a “cool” effect - it also stands for the tap from which cold water rises. In color theory, blue also stands for harmony, satisfaction and should have an emotionally calming effect. Whether the VW Polo BlueGT is only supposed to calm the nerves of tree cuddlers or whether it really spreads “satisfaction” with gasoline consumption - the practical consumption test will show it!

VOLKWAGEN VW POLO BlueGT - fuel consumption test

As Volkswagen the VW Polo BlueGT Last Spring, I was already at the presentation and was able to drive for a few hours in the BlueGT.

With the GTI make-up on the outside, the ingenious 1.4 TSI that goes unnoticed between the 2- and 4-cylinder world and the solid interior - the Polo BlueGT impresses with talents that I (for example) could not have expected of this very compact Wolfsburg man. That's enough compliment!

Conclusion from my driving report from the 13. July 2012

Indeed, the VW Polo BlueGT already impressed me back then. It seems as if you can only do that in Wolfsburg; Press a noticeable feel-good atmosphere into a small car. Everything about this polo looks so stable and pleasant to the touch that you automatically want to give it the title “class leader”.

While the Polo GTI clearly occupies the sporting position and the BlueMotion is working hard on the Baumkuschler image of Lower Saxony, wants the BlueGT The ecological fig leaf for people who want driving pleasure at GTI level, but only if the fuel consumption of their own car, not the topic at the next parents evening at the Waldorf School.  Great driving pleasure. Little thirst.

The VW Polo may be in the segment of small cars at home, but no trace of abandonment. In the case of the Polo BlueGT, the people of Lower Saxony have packed the full technology package under the bonnet and also made noticeable changes to the exterior.

He stands on neat 17-inch alloy wheels and the exterior mirrors are black piano lacquer. Smart to sporty without coming too close to the GTI as the top dog. The trunk lid got a big spoiler and in this case one believes the assertion that all this was done in the interests of aerodynamics. The Polo BlueGT imitates its fuel-saver brother “Polo BlueMotion”, but does not want to forego the fun of performance.

140 PS and 250 Nm torque are an announcement. The whole thing is paired with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The handy leather steering wheel with the small “GT lettering” fits perfectly in the hand. The will to perfection of the Wolfsburg-based company is also evident in the effort they make to ensure that every driver's stature has a perfect seating position.

The seats make you want to cross country roads, you feel in good hands. The DSG usually reacts quickly and smoothly, it just doesn't like too much gas after a stop, then the Polo hops away from the stop line with little feeling. Left, right, you can feel the reactions of the Polo that little weight meets a good choice of tires (Dunlop SP Sport in 215 / 40-17). Light-footed, it hits perfectly.

He is in the subject of driving pleasure not far behind the Polo GTI.

The engine has brains

The 140 PS strong four-cylinder turbo engine with gasoline direct injection and cylinder deactivation is also in the Audi A3 used - there I already had the feeling that this engine was a real alternative to a diesel engine. If you value high efficiency, but do not drive long distances enough to make the diesel profitable, or cannot make friends with nailing the Rudolf diesel - you are well advised with the 140 PS petrol engine.

It takes between 13 and 36 milliseconds, then the four-cylinder has shut down two of its cylinders. This works especially in the so-called part-load range, that is, when the engine just humming in front of him and has to do little work. And also on the highway in seventh gear at Tempo 120! To shut down the cylinders, the engine control unit works with the camshaft adjustment and additional intervention in the field of injection and ignition ensure that the driver does not notice the whole haunting. It works mercilessly perfect.

But does that save the BlueGT as well?

First of all the most important performance values:

V / max:

210 km/h

0-100 km / h:

7.9 sec.

Power:

140 PS

Fuel consumption according to NEDC and in liters per 100 kilometers:

Urban

5.6

Extra-urban

3.9

Combined

4.5

All figures in liters on 100 kilometers - Mind 95 octane gasoline

These are considerable standard consumption values

With a combined consumption of 4.5 liters on 100 kilometers and a CO² emission of 105 g / km VW Polo BlueGT should be a real Knauser athlete.

But - how close are the NEDC values to everyday fuel consumption?

Realistic consumption values according to the "Three types of method"

Everyday driver, without savings

5.7

Eco expert with the green toe

4.2

Field service with full throttle desire

8.2

All figures in liters on 100 kilometers.

And finally ...

In eco mode, the Polo BlueGT undercuts its NEDC value. This is a perfect result because it shows that the “Sparkniff” on the engine works.

And after I found out how happy the engine is on the gas and how much driving pleasure it conveys - one thing really surprised me: the difference between "Everyday life" and "Field worker mode" is gratifyingly low. Because the VW Polo BlueGT is a real stallion among the small cars on the autobahn. He marches off powerfully, pulls through and only lets it stop at speedometer 220. During my test lap in the “sales force mode”, I had expected values over 10 liters per 100 km.

However, the 1.4 TSI ACT is extremely frugal in the Polo, even when you put a lot of pressure on it. In addition, the aerodynamic fine-tuning seems to be effective.

In this Category: "consumption test”It is about the real consumption of new cars - apart from the unworldly NEDC norm.
