Corona left its mark

Significantly fewer cars were sold in 2020 than in the previous year. No wonder, since the car dealerships were also closed during the lockdowns.

The extent to which the measures to contain the corona pandemic had an impact on new car registrations in Germany last year is shown by this data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, prepared by Statista. Compared to 2019, almost all manufacturers had to accept significant declines in the new car business in the past year. Volkswagen will take first place in 525.600 with around 2020 new registrations, but has had to cope with a decline of almost 142.000 vehicles. Mercedes in second place (2 to 303.200) and BMW in third place (339.200 to 241.000) were able to sell significantly fewer cars. Two brands went against the trend. Fiat sold 279.000 vehicles in 2020, an increase of 89.150 vehicles or 145 percent. Tesla's sales increase is just under 0,2 percent higher. In absolute numbers, the American e-car manufacturer increased from 56 vehicles in 10.700 to 2019 vehicles.
