Cost comparison: mid-range SUVs pay off the fastest

In the long term, buying a car is cheaper than that Car rental. But surprising in a cost comparison: A Mid-size SUV pays for itself faster than a small car or a compact one.

Instead of buying a new car, you can alternatively rent it. In the short term, this could even save money, but for a longer period of use it is worth buying a new car with a loan, as the platform billiger-mietwagen.de has now calculated. It turned out that buying a mid-range SUV pays for itself much faster than buying a compact model or small car.

Cost comparison of the average annual costs

This analysis compared the costs for Fiat 500, VW Golf and VW T-Roc, which are the best-selling models in Germany in the vehicle classes of small cars, compact cars and SUVs in 2020. In the comparison calculation, financing and maintenance costs, insurance, tax and loss of value in the case of private resale after two years of use with an annual mileage of 15.000 kilometers are included in the purchase option. According to this calculation, a VW T-Roc incurs annual costs of 7.882 euros. The daily rent, however, is 88 euros. This means that after just 90 days, the rental costs would exceed the annual costs for a purchase.

In the case of the Fiat 500, annual costs of 6.062 euros are incurred when purchasing the vehicle, which is exceeded after 58 days of renting at a daily rental price of 105 euros. Annual costs of 9.533 euros were calculated for the VW Golf. According to billiger-mietwagen.de, in this case renting from the 125th day would be more expensive compared to buying privately.
