The little ones are catching up

First there was charging stations especially the locations of the car manufacturers. Then in metropolises and cities. In the meantime, they can also be found more and more often away from the major centers.

The density of charging stations is no longer only growing in the big cities. In the meantime, it is increasingly easy to refuel outside of the metropolises and even in rural regions, as can be seen from the charging station register of the energy supplier association BDEW. The front runners in the respective settlement size category are Berlin, Wolfsburg, Zwickau and Schwieberdingen.

Munich has the most pillars per resident

In the metropolitan area, Berlin is expanding its leading position with 1.799 public charging points. Munich has 1.327 and Hamburg with 1.214 charging points. If you look at the charging points per 100.000 inhabitants in the metropolises, Munich is at the top with 89 public charging points per 100.000 inhabitants. Second and third place went to Stuttgart (81 LP per 100.00 inhabitants) and Essen (73 LP per 100.000 inhabitants). With 49 points, Berlin is at the lower end of the metropolitan ranking.

Wolfsburg ranks first among the major cities with 100.000 to 500.000 inhabitants with 493 charging points. Regensburg with 282 charging points and Karlsruhe with 260 charging points follow in second and third place. In relation to the number of inhabitants, the Autostadt Wolfsburg is at the top with 396 public charging points per 100.000 inhabitants. Regensburg remains in second place with 184 charging points ahead of Heilbronn with 126 charging points per 100.000 inhabitants.

Even small towns have a lot of charging stations

Among the medium-sized cities with 20.000 to 100.000 inhabitants, Zwickau holds the leading position with 112 public charging points, closely followed by Baunatal with 105 sockets and Esslingen with 93 LP. Many small towns and rural communities with fewer than 20.000 inhabitants also rely on electromobility. Schwieberdingen made it to first place with 70 public charging points. Second and third place went to Ilsfeld (52 LP) and Giengen an der Brenz (40 LP).

In a country comparison, Bavaria holds its place at the top of the ranking; 8.412 charging points correspond to an increase of 30 percent compared to April 2020. Baden-Württemberg increased the number of its charging points by more than 40 percent and with 7.099 reported charging points is in second place ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia with a total of 6.648, Lower Saxony with 4.079 and Hesse with 2.844 .
