Driving report: Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT

Porsche upgrades its top SUV and brings the new top model Porsche Cayenne TurboGT. The largest Porsche is thus purchasing the ticket to the exclusive Tempo 300 Club.

The champagne corks can pop with the wealthy family fathers among Porsche fans. Her favorite company is finally offering a fat Cayenne in a sporty coupé dress, the speedometer needle of which can tremble at the number 300.

Expensive fun

Even the most powerful Porsche SUV, which as a hybrid with the support of an electric motor, has a system output of 500 kW680 PS, cannot achieve this magical brand. In the Turbo GT, which is designed with a focus on sportiness, the output of the well-known four-liter V8 biturbo engine has been increased to 471 kW / 640 PS. At 196.000 euros, it is also at the top of the Cayenne price list. With a few extras he easily jumps over the 200.000 hurdle. At Porsche, you would get a 911 Turbo Cabrio for about this money. However, this is only a two-seater, only at home on solid roads and therefore only partially suitable for everyday use.

A new model from Zuffenhausen that is unimpressed by all discussions, whether it is about the weight of such “city SUVs”, the high consumption or the enormous engine power. On the contrary: the critics will speak of provocation and call for the legislature. Regardless of the engineering skill or the detailed work that goes into the Cayenne Turbo GT. Not to mention the driving pleasure.

The Porsche Cayenne can do it quickly

In this respect, the first encounter with the 4,94-meter chunk on the tranquil Swedish island of Gotland is ambivalent. The desire for a hot ride on a seven-kilometer island racetrack or rather the burden that such types of cars are probably long out of their time. The numbers speak for themselves: the 2,22-ton car only needs 3,3 seconds to reach 100 km / h. The automatic rages energetically thanks to shortened shift times through its eight gears. The so-called “traction management” has also been adapted to the higher performance and, thanks to sophisticated electronics, keeps the Cayenne Turbo on the road even when the outer pair of wheels struggles for traction next to the piste in a fast bend.

The 22-inch slippers are 2,5 centimeters wider than usual, the ingeniously gripping ceramic brake is just as standard as the air suspension or rear-axle steering. This Cayenne offers a best-of of all the fine technical extras that cost a high surcharge for the other models. Another example is the roll stabilization, which, for example, counteracts the lateral inclination of the rather high Cayenne in curves and restores the contact between the wheels and the road in milliseconds. The roof spoiler moves out of its rest position depending on the speed and increases the contact pressure on the rear axle by 40 kilograms.

Fun mobile

Everything is beautiful and fascinating, especially when trying not to lose sight of a professional on a racetrack. Adrenaline mixes with awe of the possible speed, the sprint force on long straights increases the pulse and continues to swell before long bends. So that's the driving fun that Porsche enthusiasts love so much. A game with the outstanding capabilities of technology, even if normal drivers will not even come close to reaching their physical limits and probably do not want to.

Do you need the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT?

Most of the time, such a Super Cayenne will also move in real life, be placed behind trucks on country roads or stop in front of a red light in city traffic. Perhaps, thanks to up to 1.464 liters of storage space, it also transports garden furniture for the barbecue party or holiday luggage. Nobody asks for 640 hp or 300 km / h top speed. The Stuttgart racehorse in Haflinger dimensions can also be used as a packhorse or comfort carriage on the country tour. Only with this type of everyday use are the eight cylinders and their two turbo assistants content with less liquid feed. In view of the performance, an average consumption of just under twelve liters may still be appropriate.
