Driving Report: Toyota C-HR

Toyota refreshes the unconventional C-HR and gives the small crossover a second hybrid drive. He goes much faster to work.

The Toyota C-HR has been racing over our roads for three years now, but many on the screen still do not have the 4,36 meter long crossover. This is doubly amazing: First, because the Japanese small SUV coupe occurs quite extroverted and in traffic really well noticeable. On the other hand, because he counts with Toyota's bestsellers in this country last year with almost 14.000 sold units. With a discreet facelift, the car maker now wants to ensure that the C-HR - which incidentally stands for Coupé High Rider - lands more frequently on the shopping list in the future. The refreshed version is available from mid-November and rolls on the 25. January 2020 to the dealers - for at least 26.290 Euro. That's more than ever before about 4.300 Euro, because Toyota has canceled the barely requested base version.

Toyota refreshes the C-HR

The designers have hardly changed anything about the quirky appearance, only at the front and rear there is a bit of facelift cosmetics. At the front, the spoiler lip painted in the body color and the fog lights placed farther out are new, and the spotlights, which are now always illuminated with LED technology, have been subtly redesigned. In the rear view are still the strongly shaped tail lights, which will be connected in future by a high-gloss spoiler. To underline the unconventional look, Toyota offers three new colors: Blue Silver, Red and Orange; On request, there is also a two-tone paint job.

As usual, an eight-inch touch screen sits enthroned on the dashboard

Even inside Toyota has done what you do in a facelift - namely the surfaces a little prettier designed. The C-HR now looks pretty high quality and does not hide behind the competition. The space is customary in the classroom, in the back one sits above all because of the small window a bit like a cave; new is the finally height-adjustable passenger seat. As usual, an eight-inch touchscreen sits on the dashboard, flanked by a few keys. Added to this is the smartphone connection via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, the C-HR gets an online access, via which not only in the event of a crash the obligatory e-call emergency call is placed, but also up-to-date navigation cards are loaded; You can now also send routes to the navigation device via a mobile app.

The standard sprint shortens with the stronger hybrid version of eleven to entertaining 8,2 seconds

The biggest innovation is the C-HR under the metal: Toyota responds to the strong demand for hybrids - almost 85 percent have so far opted for the Doppelherzler - and passes another gasoline-electric combination. The variant with 112 kW / 153 PS strong two-liter burner and a 80 kW / 109 PS-performing electric motor is known from the Corolla and comes in total to 135 kW / 184 PS. However, like his weaker brother, he is not made for purely electric driving, the range here is also only a handful of kilometers. But the C-HR as 2.0l hybrid is clearly spritziger than with the unchanged offered 1.8er hybrid, which brings it to a maximum of 90 kW / 122 PS.

A combined torque is traditionally not Toyota, but with 190 or 202 Newtonmeter Otto and electric motor in the strong version noticeably more powerful and provide increased driving pleasure; This is also contributed to the revised for the new top version chassis, which is sufficiently taut but still not uncomfortable. What you notice on the road is also confirmed by the look into the technical data: The standard Sprint shortens with the stronger hybrid version of eleven to entertaining 8,2 seconds, although the new drive with around 1,5 tons weighs well over 100 kilograms more. The Vmax increase by 10 to 180 km / h, the standard consumption is with 5,2 liters only a few tenths higher than the known double-engine model.

The biggest innovation is the C-HR under the plate

Pricing is the surcharge for more driving pleasure at 2.000 Euro; However, the two-liter hybrid is only from the Team Germany Edition (including including blind spot warning, parking sensors, rain sensor and heated seats - but without Navi) for at least 33.690 Euro to have; The 1.8er for 29.140 Euro is also available in the new base version Flow. Here are the safety system with emergency brake function, Abstandstempomat, rear view camera and automatic climate control on board. By the way: For the above-mentioned base price of 26.290 Euro you get the still available 1,2-liter-only petrol engine with turbocharged four-cylinder, which mobilizes 85 kW / 116 PS and 185 Newtonmeter. However, it is only available with six-speed manual transmission, the continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is in the hybrids series, together with last year only 130 sold four-wheel drive flown from the program.
