Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D

A whole range of newly developed technologies ensure more safety in the ultra-high-performance winter tire SP Winter Sport 4D and at the same time provide drivers with precise feedback from the road: an important prerequisite for building trust in the vehicle and tires under a wide variety of winter conditions.

More grip on snow and ice

The recent harsh northern and central European winters have made many drivers more aware of the problem. Even in countries where the use of winter tires is not legally required, the extreme weather conditions are a reminder that it pays to equip a vehicle with the appropriate tires. The name of the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D is derived from its newly developed 4D slat system. Dr. Bernd Löwenhaupt, Dunlop Development Director, explains the new technology: “A sipe is an ultra-thin groove in the tire profile that improves traction and grip. With the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, we have expanded our much-praised 3D technology with a new transverse slat and thus created a micro-block that enables us to distribute the pressure even better on the road surface. ”This was already successful in the previous model The 3D construction of the profile used increased the number of lamellas. They can literally bite the tread into the road - the result is better performance when braking and accelerating. How far the slat opens is determined by the traction force. The greater the traction force in the direction of travel, the larger the opening. The deformation of the profile blocks is reduced by the innovative system of interlocking 3D lamellas. The new SP Winter Sport 4D has serrated notches on the inside of the tread blocks that improve braking performance on deep snow. On ice, the performance of the new Dunlop tire is improved by a rubber compound with functionalized polymers. They ensure that the symptoms caused by hardening at low temperatures are avoided.

Developed as a wetness specialist

The Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D not only offers outstanding performance on snowy roads. Because wet roads in large parts of Europe are characteristic of the winter months. In order to be able to guarantee outstanding performance even under these conditions, the developers combined a unique directional tread pattern with a dynamic tread compound. Dr. Bernd Löwenhaupt: “The functionalized polymers in the mixture provide the optimum dynamic rigidity over a wide temperature range. These active ingredients ensure that the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D offers excellent grip on wet roads without sacrificing performance on snow. The mixture we have chosen is tailor-made to maximize performance on snow and wet roads - with reduced rolling resistance and correspondingly lower fuel consumption. "

Developed for performance and precise feedback from the road

The ultra-high-performance tires from Dunlop are known for their precise feedback from the road and their very good steering feel. This is one of the reasons why many sporty drivers, tuning companies and premium original equipment manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz choose Dunlop. The claim behind these successes also applies to Dunlop's winter tires: In order to achieve excellent steering responsiveness, the 3D slat system of the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D has a special slat design that meshes with each other when force is applied . As a result, the individual tread blocks interlock and stiffen when braking and cornering quickly. In this way, they ensure good responsiveness when steering and braking, which is similar to that of a summer tire.

Low weight for better performance and efficiency

The developers of the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D also focused on reducing weight. The philosophy behind it was derived from the brand's extensive racing commitment. Especially in the field of endurance races, where Dunlop can point to race victories in the Le Mans series, the endurance championship Nürburgring and the 24h race at the Nürburgring, the continuous reduction in weight is a key factor for improved performance and efficiency. "During the development of the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, the same amount of attention was paid to this topic as would have been the case when developing a racing tire," emphasizes Dr. Bernd Löwenhaupt. “We were able to improve the rolling resistance by eleven percent compared to the predecessor - partly thanks to the functionalized polymers in the tread compound, which reduce rolling resistance and at the same time improve performance on wet roads and snow. Combined with the weight reduction, this means that the motor has to use less energy to overcome the tire's rolling resistance. "

Successor to a successful winter tire

The Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D was developed as the successor to an enormously successful predecessor: the SP Winter Sport 3D was already able to win numerous prizes and recommendations in tests by well-known automotive magazines and consumer organizations. In 4 and 2011, the SP Winter Sport 2012D also received many recommendations and top places in the established winter tire tests, continuing the tradition of its predecessor.
