Electric car dictionary: inverter

The battery is the most important part of an electric car? Not necessarily.

The heart of the electric car is not the battery, but the power electronics. It sits between the battery and the engine and regulates the interaction between the two. Its main component is the inverter.

The inverter monitors and regulates the electric motor and is therefore responsible for its torque and speed control. In addition, it converts the DC voltage of the battery, with which an electric motor cannot do anything, into AC voltage. The same thing works the other way around when recuperating: the alternating current from the generator becomes direct current for the battery.

The inverter or the power electronics are among the most important components of the electric car. In the absence of their own battery production, many German manufacturers and suppliers initially specialized in these components and brought in know-how. The most important producers today include Bosch, Continental and ZF.
