First test: New HONDA Jazz 1.3 i-VTEC

Erlensee - first test

In the last 14 years, Honda has manufactured two generations of the practical one-box Jazz small car and sold 5.5 million units. A clear sign of the accepted pragmatism of the little Japanese. In Japan, the Jazz has something like “Golf status,” where it was the best-selling model for 33 years. In autumn, HONDA will bring the third generation of Jazz to Germany. We took a closer look at the new jazz.

Everything stays practical

Bjoern 04 HONDA JAZZ Generation 3

Lookup 2015

There was no room for jazz in the now expiring Model Generation II. With number III, the Japanese are now adding again. True to the Honda motto: first the man, then the machine - one uses the length growth of the Jazz consistently for the interior. The Jazz remains just below the 4-meter mark (3.995 mm) and packs the additional 95 mm into the extended wheelbase on the one hand, and into a new efficient crash structure on the front on the other.

Honda moves the tank under the driver's seat, which leaves more space in the second row and in the trunk for the almost legendary variability of the Honda Jazz. The distance between the back seat and row one has increased again and is now at luxury class level. Anyone who wants to transport bulky goods benefits from the variability and can, among other things, fold up the “Magic Seats” like in the cinema. If you fold down the rear seats, you get a flat and deep loading area - 354 liters of loading space becomes 1.314 liters.

And then there was the “refresh mode”. The backrests of the front seats can be folded down flush with the rear seat bench. Anyone who sits on the back seat will experience the “lounge character” of a sofa. Practical for the drive-in cinema, a long break in the car - or whatever you did in the car when you were young. Restrain your imagination!

Driving Report36 HONDA JAZZ Generation 3

Not so bad, the CVT

Youthful, fresh design on the outside - rapid lines and a neat nose, together with the sporty rear, form the design line of the new Jazz. More important than design, however, is the new engine under the short hood. A newly developed 1.3 liter four-cylinder with 102 hp and 123 Nm powers the Jazz. And the range of engines is clear. Only this VTEC four-cylinder with 1.3 liter displacement and Atkinson cycle (depending on requirements) is in the current price list. However, HONDA says that this 1.3 is more economical than the “old” 1.2 and “sportier” than the “old” 1.4 liter four-cylinder.

First exit with the new CVT transmission

The new CVT transmission was specially designed for the European market and now simulates a 7-speed automatic. On the first drive, the transmission works very well, especially in quieter everyday use. However, during more sporty maneuvers, the CVT cannot deny the functionality. Small engines and continuously variable automatic transmissions, a combination in which you have to be consciously sensitive to the accelerator.

Within 12.0 seconds, the CVT accelerates to Tempo 100, a maximum of 183 km / h should be possible. Since the CVT is to drive at consistently lower speeds in everyday life, the jazz as 1.3 i-VTEC CVT saves a few grams of CO2 on the already good value of the 6-Gang handset. In the end, according to NEDC 106 gram (15-inch wheels) feasible, the handset 116 grams CO2 / km.

Engine struggles

The new HONDA Jazz is quite agile. The revised suspension eliminates any form of small car rumble, the steering feels direct enough. Only driving pleasure does not want to pay the 1.3 liter so easily. Even with the manual six-speed transmission struggles the small four-cylinder from the highway speed felt.

space giant

Inside, jazz benefits from a new design quality. The touchscreen multimedia system can not only (theoretically) make a seamless connection with the current ANDROID smartphones, it also works extremely quickly and responds wonderfully to the inputs on the touchscreen. The climate control below the touchscreen got a fresh graphic - the entire cockpit was slightly tilted towards the driver.

Honda has not changed the wide opening angle of the rear jazz doors. Almost at a 90 ° angle, they give access to row two - a real relief when getting in. Our photo also shows how much space remains in row two.

Conclusion

Praktiker starts from 15.900 €

The new jazz is also as variable as it used to be. The interior was designed in a modern way and the design outside looks fresh and dynamic. The strategy of only offering one motor doesn't really make sense. Especially since HONDA expires the hybrid version of all things. HONDA had shown particular competence here. In addition, the new 1.3 liter engine has to cover all needs - both that of city savers (1.2) and those of overland dynamics (1.4 Si) - a task that he has to nibble on tangibly.

The new jazz starts in Germany in September from € 15.900 for the entry-level version. The HONDA is priced in confidently - as we know from Honda - but the long-term quality of small jazz is also known.
