Every tenth new car was electric

The market share of e-mobiles is growing in Europe. Diesel and gasoline are losing.

Around every tenth new car in the EU had an electric drive in 2020. In addition, there was the same proportion of hybrid vehicles, as the industry association ACEA reports. The diesel's market share slipped below the 28 percent mark for the first time at 30 percent. The gasoline engine also lost ten points compared to the previous year and achieved a market share of 47,5 percent.

The winners of the year were the plug-in hybrids: 507.000 new units were registered in the EU, 262 percent more than in 2019. Germany was by far the largest market with 200.500 units. France followed in second place with almost 75.000 vehicles.

The pure e-mobiles increased in the EU by 117 percent to 539.000 units. In this drive class, too, Germany was the largest market with 194.000 new registrations, but the gap to other countries was much smaller. France, in second place, had around 111.000 new registrations. If you add up pure e-cars and socket hybrids, the number of new registrations reaches 1,05 million units for the first time, a seven-digit figure, which corresponds to a market share of 10,5 percent.

The hybrid cars without an external power connection have a quota of almost 12 percent. The ACEA counted a total of 1,182 million in the EU (excluding the United Kingdom). The largest market was Germany with 327.000 units, followed by Italy (222.000 new registrations) and France (179.000). Overall, this alternative type of drive is more evenly distributed across Europe than the more electrified variants.

Gas drives are becoming less important. In 2020 there were still 208.000 new registrations, 18 percent fewer than in the previous year. They were strong with 125.000 units, especially in Italy, while Germany had around 13.000 vehicles.
