Driving Report: Heartbreaker - Fiat 500S 0.9 Twinair

"Matt paint, that's something of 2012 ..." - until suddenly the Fiat 500S in Alpi Verde stands in front of you.

Now that even the last premium manufacturer has jumped on the train of matte paintwork, its ride has slowed down greatly. In all shades of gray, we have now seen it, whether low-foiled or sprayed consuming - somehow the trend is no longer.

And then comes the normal little Fiat and wears NATO olive. Of course, they call it wonderfully different, but the presence does not become more timid. The yellow (!) Leather interior makes it no less noticeable.

The 500S is so a blast. With the large air intakes, spoiler fins on the front and rear, as the dark windows and darkened chrome accents, he also makes on evil. Red calipers and accents on the dull black sixteen-inch wheels get the rest.

The model-maintained LED bulbs on the front and rear a year ago are now even better in this environment, especially if one hooks the grim xenon lenses in the surcharge list. Anyway, it's the price that you have to digest right at the beginning: just under 22.000 Euro notes our test car mute and a little bashful on the leaflet. Truly much money for so little car. But the 500S with its 105 PS twin-air engine ensures that the pain over the powerful price is quickly forgotten even when stationary.

In the interior, it welcomes you in a dark cave thanks to the black roof lining, the sports seats have the same yellow leather accents as the door panels, the steering wheel is sporty and the gear lever of the six-speed gearbox is as usual close to hand. The new Uconnect Live HD navigation system is wonderfully fresh - no comparison to the similar system in its big siblings - the connectivity via cable and Bluetooth works wonderfully and the 440 watts of the Beats sound system with fat subwoofer push at least as well as the 0.9 when stationary Liter two-cylinder.

Because: it still limps a little above the idle limit. Once in motion, it is the source of joy that it has always been. Perhaps even the happiest motor currently available for money? His tremolo - this wonderful jerking, the distant sound of a Ducati-V2 or simply the childhood memory when we still put the lollipop stick in the bicycle spokes, wonderful. You are always amazingly high-speed, because the blunted four-cylinder ear simply hears too few ignition processes and always thinks that it is at half speed. This is not a problem, however, because the Twinair only fires all its power on the top of the turn. It blooms up here, tears almost greedily and throws the little 500 loosely out of the corners and balances it if necessary at just under 200km / h on the highway.

That this is not his preferred terrain, of course, the 500S nothing. Its short wheelbase and high build feel more committed to the city than the long distance distillery. An abrupt braking maneuver from full speed, because a Ausscherender has overlooked the small mats, happy to end with sweaty palms and big-wheeled eyes. He is then very easy on the rear axle, starts a little dance, like two. With the steering, the whole thing is not really capture, too little feedback gives you, because all feeling is stifled in the massive power assistance.

But he is just a small car, a heartbreaker and none for the lap record. In the city, he then straightens the world: quickly at the traffic light, accurately in all gaps and easy to park with one finger. In addition the suitable beat from the exhaust and the world is really very fine.
