Ferrari SF90 Stradale - 90 years of Scuderia Ferrari

Ferrari SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid supercar with V8 and two electric motors

The new Ferrari SF1.000 Stradale, a standard PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), delivers 90 hp. The SF90 Stradale is an extreme car in every respect. It delivers unprecedented performance for a production car in this class.

Its performance data speak a clear language. 730 kW (1.000 hp), a power-to-weight ratio of 1,57 kg/hp and a downforce of 390 kg at 250 km/h make the SF90 Stradale the V8 top model for the first time in the history of the brand.

The most powerful car in the history of the Cavallino Rampante

The car's name reveals the true meaning of the performance improvements achieved. The reference to the 90th anniversary of the founding of Scuderia Ferrari underlines the close connection that has always existed between Ferrari racing and road cars.

The SF90 Stradale aims to embody the most advanced technologies from Maranello and at the same time shows how perfectly Ferrari understands how to use the knowledge and skills gained from racing for its production cars.

The SF90 Stradale is equipped with a turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 780 hp (574 kW) – the highest output of any 8-cylinder engine in Ferrari history. The remaining 156 kW (220 hp) come from three electric motors. One of them, the MGUK (Motor Generator Unit, Kinetic) known from Formula 1, is located between the engine and the new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox on the rear axle and two on the front axle.

However, the sophisticated system does not make driving more complicated. On the contrary: the driver only has to select one of the four drive modes and can then concentrate fully on driving. The rest is done by the sophisticated control logic, which ensures the flow of energy between the V8, the electric motors and the batteries.

Ferrari SF90 Stradale - First Ferrari with four-wheel drive

The SF90 Stradale is Ferrari's first all-wheel drive sports car. This is necessary in order to be able to fully exploit the immense power of the hybrid drive. It ensures that the car becomes the new benchmark for standing starts: 0-100km/h in 2,5 seconds and 0-200km/h in just 6,7 seconds.

Introducing this hybrid architecture was also a challenge because of the added weight. For maximum performance in terms of overall weight, rigidity and center of gravity, the chassis and body of the SF90 Stradale have been completely redesigned using multi-material technologies such as carbon fibre.

Minimal air resistance and many aerodynamic components characterize the SF90

The development of such a hybrid car required the creation of a whole range of innovative aerodynamic solutions. Due to the significant increase in power of the engine, more thermal energy has to be dissipated, which is why the aerodynamic flow at the radiating masses had to be examined in detail. New solutions were also required to efficiently increase downforce and ensure maximum stability at all speeds and in all riding conditions.

Shut-off gurney controls airflow

Of particular note is the innovative shut-off gurney, a patented active system at the rear of the vehicle that controls airflow over the upper body area. Air resistance is reduced at high speeds with low lateral dynamic loads, and contact pressure is increased in curves, when braking and when changing direction.

The rule "eyes on the road, hands on the steering wheel" derived from the race track also plays a really central role for the first time and has a significant impact on the ergonomics and design of the interior. The result is a human-machine interface (HMI) and interior design concept that is very different from previous models.

Another major innovation is the steering wheel, which now features a touchpad and a set of haptic buttons. It allows the driver to control virtually every aspect of the vehicle with just their thumb. The central instrument cluster is fully digital and features, for the first time in a car, a curved 16-inch HD screen that can be configured and controlled via the steering wheel controls.

The center tunnel combines improved ergonomics and an element from the past. The automatic transmission is now operated by a grid-like element. It is reminiscent of the legendary manual gate shift from Ferrari. Past and present are thus cleverly fused to lead the new Ferrari into the future.

The SF90 Stradale is ignited without a key

Another first in the SF90 Stradale is keyless ignition. The new ignition button will gradually be introduced throughout the range, each with the name of the model. Thanks to a special compartment in the center tunnel, it becomes an integral part of the design.

In addition to the sporty version, which refers to the shape and color of the characteristic rectangular Cavallino badge of Ferrari road cars, there will also be a more elegant version in metal color.

Standard or Sport version

For the first time in a Ferrari, customers can now choose between the standard version and a version with more sporty specifications. The Assetto Fiorano specification includes important improvements. Special Multimatic shock absorbers from GT racing and extra light equipment features made of high-performance materials such as carbon fiber (door panels, underbody) and titanium (springs, entire exhaust system). This results in a weight saving of 30 kg.

Another difference is the carbon fiber rear spoiler, which generates 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The tires of the SF90 are specially designed to improve performance on dry roads. They feature a softer compound and fewer grooves than standard tires.
