Fewer traffic fatalities

Because of Corona there was less going on on German roads; this can also be found in the accident statistics.

Last year, the number of people killed in road traffic in Germany fell sharply. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 2.719 people died in road accidents. That was 10,7 percent less than in 2019.

According to preliminary calculations, Destatis recorded the greatest decline in the number of car occupants killed. Compared to the previous year, their number fell by 14,2 percent to 1.170 deaths. The number of pedestrians killed in traffic fell by 9,8 percent to 376 fatalities. The decrease in the number of fatally injured cyclists was less pronounced. There was a minus of 4,3 percent (226 deaths).

In 2020, 73 percent of all pedestrians killed in road traffic and 60 percent of all cyclists killed in urban accidents died. Almost 90 percent of all car occupants killed had an accident outside of town.

The number of accidents in 2020 was determined by the decline in traffic due to the corona pandemic. According to preliminary calculations by the Federal Highway Research Institute, the total mileage of all vehicles fell in 2020 by almost 11 percent compared to the previous year.
