Fresher, sharper, hotter: Audi RS7 Sportback

Sharp facelift for the 560 PS strong sportback

Sportback or classic GT? Audi speaks of a Sportback in the RS7. But the sportiest version of the A7 is also an extremely successful GT. A Gran Turismo based on classic knitting. A lush motorized athlete for the long drive. A car with which you can travel stylishly and above all quickly over long distances. Two doors? It may or may not be. The RS7 embodies the elegance of a coupe without sacrificing the practical touch of four doors. With the latest facelift, Audi has sharpened the profile of the RS7 and also honed its look. The RS7 - pureGT.

The new headlights and their changed graphics for the daytime running lights are eye-catching. The RS7 already lights up in series with LED technology. The LED matrix headlights shine at the front for a surcharge. The grille, with its traditional black honeycomb look, has been sharpened in the corners, as have the bumpers with newly shaped air inlets. Carefully as always, the design is just being fine-tuned. Audi is not known for “experimental design”, here optimization is carried out with a steady hand on a clear line. The RS7 is probably the most erotic interpretation of the Group's otherwise Teutonic-technoid design language. Far from vulgar optics. The revised RS7 also testifies to the fetish of producing the most insanely minimalized gaps in the entire auto industry. No other manufacturer produces vehicles that look like this from a single source. Light edges are a deliberate result of the design, not a faux pas in production or evidence of a loveless processing. Here, too, the RS7 exudes the elite character of a high-quality GT. The great journey will not shake him. Solid as a rock, formed in the sculptural craftsmanship of one Michelangelo.

"Audi RS7 - where technology meets performance, controlled by design."

But it's not just the design or the enormous quality of the workmanship, it's the technical features that make the Audi RS7 special. A brief overview can be found here:

COD technology

A four liter V8 Bi-Turbo spreads under the hood with the two creases. So that the 560 PS does not get thirsty through everyday life, the TFSI engine was equipped with a cylinder deactivation. Audi calls this technology COD, what a Cylinder on demand stands. In partial load operation, four of the eight pots switch off within milliseconds and thus increase the efficiency of the eight-person. Despite 700 Nm, the NEDC mix wants to get by with 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

8 gear Tiptronic

Two metallic shift paddles on the steering wheel testify to the automatic transmission. The RS7 drives up in series with the famous 8 automatic transmission. This automatic transmission supplied by ZF was already fully convincing in the test with the current A6 Allroad. Hardly noticeable gear changes, a wide gear spread and with sailing function and start-stop support in keeping with the times. The eighth gear was translated long.

Dynamic Ride Control

A lot of performance, a lot of weight and the aspiration as a GT to reach its goal quickly and in a sporty manner. This challenges the chassis developers. The RS7 optionally drives up with the DRC chassis. The diagonally opposite dampers are connected by pressure line and valves. An immersion on one side increases the pressure on the other side and thus reduces the rolling motion of the vehicle and at the same time increases the possible driving dynamics.

MMI

Special hardware also ensures a special kind of experience in the interior. While the completely new models have already replaced the classic round instruments with large-area TFTs, the RS7 first trims the MMI display between the round instruments to achieve maximum graphic performance. State-of-the-art hardware from IT specialist nVidia provides the computing power necessary to produce sophisticated graphics.

And that says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg on the fresh Audi RS7 Sportback:

The Audi RS 7 Sportback confirms the reputation of the RS models as the sovereign top athletes of our brand. The combination of a powerful four-liter V8 engine with cylinder ‑ on ‑ demand technology, quattro drive and intelligent lightweight construction make the RS 7 Sportback an outstanding sports device for every fan of dynamic and efficient driving.

You can only contradict him on the point of lightweight construction. With an empty weight of just under two tons, the RS7 is certainly not an intelligent representative of a lightweight construction philosophy. Lightweight? You think of a lotus. Colleague Sebastian recently drove a corresponding model. The RS7 can take off properly from the start line, thanks to 560 PS and 700 Nm, the many pounds of the Ingolstadt GT are also brought into full swing. The all-wheel drive with optional sport differential promises traction at all times, effectively distributes the raw power of the Bi-Turbo and promises not to lose grip even on days without sunshine.

About the qualities in the interior of the Ingolstadt upper class I have in the article on Audi Allroad already extensively omitted - the RS7 creates the same level without handicap, but with a sporty touch.

The RS7 promises a sinful tour without handicap.

I have not yet driven the new Audi RS7, but you can find it in the blog next to the article linked above (follow the sinful tour), the following models with an extensive driving report:
