Used car check: BMW X5 (type F15)

The BMW X5 (Type F15) has been retired for almost three years. The TÜV classifies this model series as predominantly vigorous, but there is a weak point in the BMW X5.

The BMW X5 has been part of the German street scene since 1999. Since 2018 the big one SUV meanwhile in the fourth generation on the market. Third generation models (type F15, end of 2013 to end of 2018) offer those interested in used cars the opportunity to acquire somewhat older but also younger models.

Body and interior

The BMW X5 is not exactly one of the inconspicuous representatives of its class. The almost 4,90 meter long thick ship drives up with large air inlets in the beefy front, heavily modeled flanks and wide stern. The term “stately” can be applied to the SUV. At least four adults will find plenty of space, the middle seat in the rear and the two seats in the optionally available third row have more of the character of an emergency seat. The luggage compartment varies between 650 and 1.870 liters, depending on the seating position.

Inside, it's cozy, dignified, and luxurious. Workmanship and choice of materials can be seen and felt. With the third generation, BMW caught up with its competitors from Stuttgart and Ingolstadt in this regard.

Motors and drive

Most BMW X5 buyers preferred a diesel engine. The range includes diesel engines with four and six cylinders. All-wheel drive is standard on the six-cylinder, the two-liter four-cylinder is available with front-wheel drive and, on request, with 4 × 4 drive. The power transmission takes over an eight-speed automatic transmission with all engines - also with the gasoline ones.

The 2,0-liter diesel (25d) initially developed 160 kW / 218 PS (since 2015: 170 kW / 231 PS) and is sufficient for drivers who do not value excessive power. The standard sprint is achieved in 8,2 seconds, and BMW specifies consumption between 5,7 and 5,9 (all-wheel drive) liters. A little more is approved according to the standard of the 30d (6,2 liters). The 3,0-liter in-line six-cylinder in this expansion stage has 190 kW / 258 PS and 560 Nm. It goes from 6,9 to 0 km / h in 100 seconds, the top speed of 230 km / h is 30 km / h above that of the four-cylinder. Also on offer are the 40d (230 kW / 313 PS and 630 Nm) and the 50d with 280 kW / 381 PS and 740 Nm. Here, an average of between 6,3 and 6,7 liters of diesel flow through the lines.

The X5 is also available as a plug-in hybrid

The petrol range contains four engines and includes four, six and eight cylinders. The 3,0-liter six-cylinder in the 35i has an output of 225 kW / 306 PS, the 4,4-liter eight-cylinder has 330 kW / 450 PS (50i) and the top engine in the X5 M has 424 kW / 575 PS. The standard consumption values of the BMW X5 are between 8,5 and 11,1 liters. The average consumption of the plug-in hybrid (40e) is given as 3,4 liters. Here BMW combines a two-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor into a 230 kW / 313 hp overall package. There is also an extra large battery with a socket connection, which is good for up to 31 kilometers of electric travel.

Equipment and safety

The X5 models are well equipped ex works. This is hardly surprising, as first-time buyers had to invest at least 52.000 euros (25d). The class-standard equipment is therefore on board. But of course BMW did not miss the opportunity to arouse individualization requests from buyers with this SUV either. Those interested in used cars cannot avoid comparing the equipment details of the models.

Anyone who values cruise control, seat heating or the head-up display, for example, has to keep an eye out. As a special feature, BMW offered a night vision aid for its luxury SUV that also recognizes animals. The parking assistant places the SUV in the parking bay both lengthways and crossways, and a traffic jam assistant could also be ordered. BMW had waived a Euro NCAP crash test. On the other hand, the X5 was able to achieve consistently good results in crash tests carried out in the USA by NHTSA and IIHS.

Quality

A visit to the TÜV for the main inspection does not pose any problems for the BMW X5 in most categories. When checking the lighting and braking systems, the testers found little to complain about. The exhaust system also gives little cause for complaint. However, those interested in used cars should take a look to see if the X5 spills any oil. The TÜV inspectors found a lot to complain about when checking the chassis. Due to the heavy weight of the vehicles, worn axle components and broken springs often occur here. The repairs can be expensive.

Conclusion

The BMW X5 is a luxurious SUV that, depending on the equipment and extras, spoils you with a lot of comfort. Even the initial purchase was expensive, so it's no wonder that the used models also achieve good prices. Interested parties should be prepared to invest at least 20.000 euros.
