Now changing tires means more safety, driving comfort and mileage

Spring means spring cleaning, stowing winter coats and converting car tires. Because winter and summer tires are experts for their season. However, car owners still tend to continue using their winter tires in the summer, the less the remaining tread depth is. However, experts advise against it. Because comparison tests show that winter tires offer considerably less safety in summer.

Comparison full braking in wet conditions

Even at a spring-like 15°C, emergency braking in the wet from 70 km/h shows a braking distance four meters shorter with summer tires than with winter tires with a residual profile of four millimeters. [1]

“The braking behavior when wet in summer is obviously worse with winter tires. But winter tires have other disadvantages in summer, ”explains Michael Fett, Product Manager Goodyear Dunlop for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “Winter tires are also clearly inferior to summer tires in summer when it comes to other performance criteria such as grip on dry roads or cornering power. For safety reasons, I therefore recommend changing the tires now. ”

Special rubber compound for summer temperatures

Modern tires consist, among other things, of innovative rubber compounds and sophisticated tread design. They are specially developed for the respective season and show their strength in the corresponding temperature range. Winter blends remain soft and flexible even at low temperatures, which enables good road contact. At high temperatures, this property is reversed. The result is higher abrasion and significantly longer braking distances. In summer, therefore, summer tires with a special rubber compound ensure more safety, greater driving comfort and better mileage.

New Goodyear summer tire with 50 percent more mileage

Goodyear recommends the new EfficientGrip Performance 2020 for summer 2. It has a high mileage and very short braking distances on wet and dry roads - independent tests by TÜV SÜD showed this compared to four competitors tested.[2]

The high-performance tire has an impressive mileage that is around 50 percent higher than its predecessor. [3] At the same time, it outperforms Michelin, its closest competitor in mileage tests, by 20 percent [4].
