Cooperation between Toyota and Subaru - Japanese develop electric cars together

The largest and one of the smallest Japanese automakers are working together on e-mobility. A concrete model has already been announced.

SP-X / Cologne. Japanese automakers Toyota and Subaru are jointly developing a platform for electric vehicles. A concrete model in the form of an electric compact SUV is also planned, as the companies say. The hybrid experts from Toyota and the much smaller all-wheel drive specialist Subaru want to use the cooperation to close their supply gap in battery-electric drives. Neither brand currently has a corresponding model in its range. With the Mirai, Toyota offers a fuel cell-electric car, but technology and infrastructure are not ready for broad market success in the short term. The two companies do not mention a time horizon for the development of battery cars.

The two Japanese carmakers have already had experience of working together. For example, they build the Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ sports car duo together. The technology of the Subaru hybrid models in the USA also comes from Toyota.
