Test: Škoda Yeti Outdoor 2.0 TDI

After 580.000 sold units around the world, Škoda has been shipping its long-running Yeti with two different body styles to the global market since 2013. The compact SUV with removable rear seats 2009 began his triumphal march as a newcomer and developed with the demands of its buyers for lifestyle and off-road vehicle. Equipped with the Škoda 4X4 permanent four-wheel drive, contemporary safety systems and plenty of customization options for the exterior and interior of the Yeti is now in the next model year. With his outdoor charm and a total of three engine classes, he continues 2017 through, a year later in the 2. Generation to go. The start is the terrain Yeti at a price of 20.190 Euro.

The front of the compact SUV shapes a slightly raised to the sides apron. Prominent sits the "Škoda brand logo" on the hood, the chrome-framed grille underneath and the angular headlamps with LED daytime running in a straight bead below the windows over the entire length of the vehicle before ending with the also edged tail lights. At the rear, the headlights ensure a confident appearance. The roof rail is firmly connected to the roof. That improves the aerodynamics. With just under 1,79 meter width and 1,69 meter height, the car is also narrower and lower compared to its competitors. The optimized wind slipperiness has a positive effect on fuel consumption (5,5 liters in the standard test) and exhaust emissions (144 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer) despite its six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. So the theory. Unfortunately we can not reach the given values at any time. The only available as a five-seater Škoda Yeti is on the road as a soft off-roader. He also makes a good figure in the city.

Interior used efficiently

The cockpit, which can be operated intuitively, is noticed positively from the first contact with the Czech. All of the instruments that affect the vehicle, as well as the navigation system with a smartphone connection in the middle of the dashboard, offer neither too much nor too little information. Optionally available, the Škoda SmartLink technology “reflects” certain smartphone applications on the 6,5-inch display. With the also optional SmartGate function, data is extracted from the vehicle in a Škoda Drive app, which shows the driver whether he has covered the last route efficiently. The well-shaped front seats not only look ergonomically styled, they also provide support in every driving situation. In terms of flexibility, the Yeti is in line with the trend of its competitors and sets standards. Thanks to the concept for the rear seat bench, it can not only be folded down, it can also be removed entirely. After that, the cargo space without a spare wheel increases from 510 liters to a generous 1.760 liters.

Good running diesel

The 150 HP diesel we tested provides a good dose of driving pleasure. Because with a maximum torque of 340 Newton meters at 1.750 - 3.000 revolutions, the unit can refill intensively at any time. Combined with the comfortably graded six-speed dual clutch transmission, the compact SUV from the Czech Republic can be controlled very easily through city and urban traffic. In conjunction with its cruise control system, the vehicle also performs well on longer motorway routes. The only annoying thing is starting off with the DSG gearbox, which starts with a delay. The steering with electromechanical steering support is designed to be extremely track-safe, so that in the city, especially with the turning circle of 10,32 m, very relaxed driving and parking is possible.

Permanent all-wheel drive

Driver comfort systems that we already know from other Škoda models can also be found in the Yeti Outdoor. The engineers from Mladá Boleslav (approx. 60 km from Prague) not only installed a greatly improved ESP with hill climbing and hill descent assistance. Among other things, an engine drag torque control (MSR), a brake assistant, an anti-slip control (ASR) and an electronic differential lock (EDL) are used. The permanent all-wheel drive system, available as standard in all 4 x 4 variants, also supports the driver with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. In driving situations that do not require all four wheels to be driven, the rear axle is largely decoupled. This means that the drive is largely via the front axle. The rear axle is only switched on via the clutch when required.

Compact SUV with moderate prices

The Yeti Outdoor, which is available from Škoda dealers both as a front-wheel drive and with 4 x 4 all-wheel drive, is available from a price of 20.190 euros. For this, the car manufacturer from the VW Group offers a 1.2-liter TSI petrol engine with 110 PS. The diesel engine, on the other hand, comes up with the 2.0 TDI as both a front-wheel drive and a 4 x 4-drive unit with the output levels 81 kW (110 PS) and 110 kW (150 PS) and six-speed manual transmission or six-speed dual clutch transmission. The base price here is 23.090 euros. The price differences between the four equipment lines Active, Ambition, Style and L&K are kept moderate.

Good combination of price and benefits.
And finally ...

The Škoda Yeti Outdoor can live quite well with the term "compact SUV". In addition, the combination of space and driving dynamics in all situations with nice terrain look very well done.
