Lancia Stratos fans were shocked when it was announced that Fiat was not planning any new versions of the popular sports car. One person was not satisfied with that, the entrepreneur Michael Stoschek, because he is planning the new Lancia New Stratos. As a collector and driver of historic racing cars, he commissioned Pininfarina to develop a new model. It took more than 2008 years, starting in 2, until the Lancia New Stratos was presented to the public for the first time on December 13, 2010.
Lancia New Stratos 2.0
The new edition of the former rally car made its debut on the Paul Ricard racetrack in France. The New Stratos is based on Ferrari's 430 Scuderia model. Due to the numerous changes and adjustments, however, there is little left of it. Of course, many details of the Stratos were to be retained in order not to falsify its legendary charm. The New Stratos is therefore also strikingly built with its very short wheelbase.
The Lancia New Stratos chassis is made of aluminium
The engine was placed centrally again and, together with its light construction, gives the New Stratos very agile handling. The weight distribution from front to back is almost balanced (44:56 percent).
The chassis is made of aluminum tubing and is 20 cm shorter than the original. A steel roll cage ensures safety. In order to be able to save even more weight, carbon fiber was used almost exclusively for the Lancia New Stratos. This allowed the weight to be reduced by 80 kg to 1.247 kg. The brake system works with ceramic discs and brakes the New Stratos with its 19-inch tires within a few seconds.
Decades of development passed between the construction of the original and the new edition. The driver of the Lancia New Stratos can electronically regulate the spring force of the shock absorbers. The electro-hydraulic steering enables very precise driving. If you want to use the sports car properly, LED lights will help you find the right shift point.
The 6-speed gearbox requires less than 60 ms for each shift. Everything is supported and controlled by a sophisticated electronic control unit.
So far, around 40 interested parties have liked the New Stratos. But as it stands, the New Stratos will remain a one-off. Because from the latest sources it can be seen that Ferrari does not want to consider the production of the reinterpretation of the rally car from the 70s. It's a pity, since it was assumed that a small series of at least 500 vehicles would be produced for this rally legend.
