Fewer commuters, leisure traffic stable

It doesn't always have to be the car to get from A to B. For many commuters, however, the alternatives are not.

The Corona pandemic has permanently changed the mobility behavior of people in Germany. Especially in the professional environment. The proportion of employees who drive to work five days a week is permanently falling from 39 to 28 percent. "The changed travel behavior is putting mobility providers under pressure to maintain the volume of journeys and to increase them again in view of the current level of use," explains Patrick Valentin, Senior Director at Simon-Kucher & Partners. In the “Travel Trends 2021” study, the company examined mobility behavior, especially with regard to public transport.

40 percent of all respondents have not yet used an alternative to their private car. Even in cities with well-developed local public transport and a wide range of alternative mobility solutions from car sharing to e-scooters, only around two-thirds (65%) of those surveyed make use of such offers.

Around half are commuters

If public transport or alternative means of mobility are used, the majority (54%) usually do this in their free time on weekends or in the evening. In addition, 46 percent of consumers use the alternatives to get to and from work. A third of those surveyed stated that they used these modes of transport for business trips.

The analysts see a good chance for new mobility offers in offers in which both conventional and new mobility solutions are included in a subscription.
