Long delivery times for e-cars - chip crisis calls for patience

In extreme cases, anyone who orders an electric car now will not get it until spring 2023. However, a few models will also be in front of the door much faster.

Anyone who buys a new electric car needs patience. Only six of the 30 most popular models can be delivered within the usual period of three months, according to a survey by the magazine "Auto Motor und Sport Moove". According to this, it currently takes an average of five to six months between signing the contract and delivery. The reason is the coincidence of high demand with a supply impaired by the lack of chips.

The Audi Q4 E-Tron has the most extreme delivery time, for which buyers have to wait up to 15 months. It takes ten months for the VW ID.3, the Mercedes EQC or the Dacia Spring to be on the doorstep. People wait between eight and nine months for the VW ID.4, Smart Fortwo and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Only the Tesla models 3 and Y can be delivered within one to two months, while the Fiat 500e, Opels Corsa-e and three months Mokka-e and the Polestar 2.

In addition to purely electric models, plug-in hybrids are also currently in demand, but are difficult to obtain. This results, among other things, in 14 months delivery time for the Mercedes GLE 350 e. Buyers wait ten months for the Mercedes A 250 e and nine months for a Seat Leon 1.4 e-Hybrid. Waiting times will probably not decrease in the short term. The chip shortage continues, the high demand will probably also remain.
