Mazda CX-5 driving report

After around five years of construction, Mazda refreshes its CX-5 - but only cosmetically. So far, however, there hasn't been much reason for complaint anyway. We were on the road with the new vintage.

Even after half a decade, the Mazda CX-5 is still so modern and pleasing that there is obviously no need for action on the sheet metal body. On the other hand, if you get in, the new year is quickly identified: then, even at the first, fleeting contact, it becomes apparent that a larger central display now takes account of the increasing demands in the infotainment sector. The 10,25-inch display is complemented by an optional head-up display that projects information onto the windscreen and not into a small, raised Plexiglas flap. And so that the joy of the refreshed CX-5 remains for a long time, the now available 360-degree camera jumps on in advance obedience as soon as you slowly approach an obstacle and not only after engaging reverse gear.

Not to underestimate

Despite the emotional design, which is particularly impressive in combination with the special Magma Red Metallic paint, the Mazda CX-5 (from 27.690 euros), which has long been established in the local street scene, is more of the down-to-earth type and is close to the two-liter range in terms of displacement, although it remains even after the slight facelift. With the diesel engines, which are still in high demand, you treat yourself to 2,2 liters and rely on two-stage turbocharging. In terms of performance, the diesel side ranks between 110 kW / 150 PS and 135 kW / 184 PS - however, the powerful variant should also be combinable with front-wheel drive in the future. In the all-wheel drive, a modified drive train with reduced internal friction creates more efficiency and ensures that the average consumption in the WLTP discipline for the powerful diesel, for example, drops from 7,1 to 6,6 liters per hundred kilometers.

With the 121 kW / 165 PS strong basic petrol engine (two-liter displacement) with automatic transmission, consumption even drops by up to 0,6 from 8,3 to 7,7 liters per hundred kilometers - depending on the tires. And the 143 kW / 194 hp 2,5-liter top-of-the-range petrol engine is 19 liters more economical with 0,8-inch tires and only consumes eight liters averaged.

Better not to demand top performance

While the diesels do not start until spring, Mazda has brought its top-of-the-range petrol engine with them for the first test drive. What has not changed is that the 4,55 meter long all-rounder is more of a cruiser than a dynamic one, with plenty of space in the interior, comfortable seats and solid workmanship and a maximum trunk volume of 1.620 liters. Anyone who opts for gasoline engines should think carefully about paying an extra 1.200 euros for the two-and-a-half-liter - the 165 hp of the two-liter fit the performance characteristics better than the 194 hp, which can only be guessed at when the engine speed range is fully exploited, but then it sounds like Suction engine also strained.

So that no misunderstandings arise: The large direct injection always looks confident, just not as snappy as its nominal output would lead you to believe. And the two-liter also has the breath to swim properly even on the autobahn.

Ideal for long journeys

The suspension of the SUV turns out to be harmonious, and the six-speed automatic transmission works smoothly, also offers enough gear ratios to keep the unit efficient. It just works without the nine courses that are modern today. The Japanese make it comfortable and are a welcome tool for long journeys. He skilfully parries short waves and sometimes whispers a bit more forcefully around the corner without making the driver sweat.

And just in case, you are ideally protected with a broad arsenal of assistants from autonomous emergency braking including recognition of pedestrians even at night to drowsiness reminders. Speaking of darkness: Mazda can provide the CX-5 with adaptive matrix headlights on request, which you won't find in this class from every manufacturer. And active braking interventions even take place at speeds of up to 160 km / h.
