Mazda CX-5 - Old virtues, new arts

On the 19. May brings Mazda the second generation of the CX-5 at prices starting from 24.990 Euro in Germany on the market. Although the new edition looks like the predecessor at first glance, the SUV was nevertheless extensively modernized.

The outer dimensions have changed only slightly. Thanks to slightly modified proportions the new looks stretched and stocky. The front end with the narrower LED headlights and the flatter grill underline the more dynamic appearance. In addition, the designers have worked out the edges and lines stronger, which ensures a contrasting light and shadow on the sweeping body.

The interior also presents itself with more chic. Chrome surrounds, piano lacquer on the center console, a noticeably higher material appearance and, on request, fine, soft leather - that has a premium level. In addition, there are new equipment options such as a head-up display, or a traffic jam assistant, which not only slows down to a stop on the radar cruise control, but then also starts again by itself.

The occupants can look forward to the back and comfortable stalls and decent space. The luggage compartment grew from 500 to 506 liters, maximum 1.620 liters are possible. For the first time Mazda offers for the CX-5 an automatically opening and closing tailgate.

The engines come from the predecessor. In addition to the 2,2-liter diesel in the 110 kW / 150 hp and 129 kW / 175 hp output levels, there is also the 2,0-liter entry-level gasoline engine with 121 kW / 165 hp, which, however, uses five horses less in the all-wheel drive variant . The 4 × 4 option can also be used for diesels (without loss of line) for a fee of around 2.000 euros.

Thanks to changes to the chassis and body, the CX-5 offers more driving pleasure. The steering aid G-Vectoring-Control also provides additional dynamism, which distributes the engine torque differently to the wheels in turns, depending on the steering wheel angle with minimal adjustment, in order to stabilize the vehicle. At the same time, the chassis has become more comfortable and is able to iron even rough road surfaces largely smoothly. The noise reduction was also significantly improved. (Michael Lennartz)
